how did you do the pre-game configuration thing?
check the hardware config, make sure that you enable 3D acceleration and adjust everything to maximum PC level.
then check Graphics, make sure that you use 3D acceleration as well. If played under 1024X768, the game runs too slow, you might not have a good enough video card, go back to 800X600 res.

I've experienced a similar problem myself. All I did was switching off my 3D acceleration. Also the 800x600 res. is recommended so try that too.

Do the "3D setup" in the config program. I believe you have to be connected to the internet though

wrong. Disable 3D acceleration. My BG2 used to run slow as hell. Someone told me to:

1. Start menu--->run
2. type in dxdiag
3. go to the tab that says graphics (or maybe display, don't remember)
4. Disable 3d Acceleration

BG2 should run muuuuch faster now. 3D acceleration isn't even needed to play BG2. Having it on only slows down the game, it doesn't add anything to it. Remember to enable it again using the same process when you want to play a different game.

Mine was running slow a while ago, and then I realized I had 10,000 or so temporary internet files. Deleting those and restarting the computer made the problem go away.

[/QUOTE]well, it may be wrong for you, but it's right for me. I've always have 3D acceleration on and play 1024 X 768, and the game rarely, if ever, runs slowly. Since my game runs smoothly that way, I gave that advice.

ADD:
ok, I just tested both ways. *On my computer* ( = might not be appliable to others' computers) there's no running speed difference as I felt it between enabling and disabling 3D acceleration. The only difference I can tell is very small visual quality thing: shadows and color lines are refined and delicated in 3D acelerated mode yet appeared to be pixelized in the non-3D acelerated mode.

3D acceleration in BG2 just displays certain special effects with the 3D card rather than the 2D software. Depending on the card, this can be a massive slowdown. But with a good card and a slow CPU, you can get a significant performance gain. With a good card and a modern CPU, there should be little if any difference in speed.

In short, this is one of those setting you have to experiment with to find whats best for you.

Regarding the turning off the 3D acceleration in the dxdiag I think that's a pretty extreme solution. All you really have to do is open the BG2 config and disable it for BG2 itself.
