It's hit for damage in fact, combat in AD&D is not about hit and miss, armor simply allow's you to deflect attack's better making it harder for you to be hit for damage..

I must dissagree, you see all them purty diffrect grafical effect's when you change armor, well if you look closely you can tell of what sort, either chain, leather or plate and in some rare cases none at all.. Though if you look at the chart above you can see it's generaly better to beat the snot out of people with blunt and blugioning weapons, with the exception being splint mail..

And if your not a fighter type, say if your a bard or other such getting more than one * in a weapon is impossicible (I hearby declair a new word born) so carrying around an enchanted spear, longsword and big stick can be usefull... Though you could just slug it out with whatever happen's to be in your hands, though though force of habit of an ill spent youth I change weapon to face diffrent foes.... //You are attacked, roll two D6 and disscard the lowest to escape//

Splint Mail..0.........-1........-2

Ah i must have missed that part as my manual is a pdf file come on a separate cd don't know if it's the same for you guys, so it's a pain to read especially when ingame and you won't a quick refrence on something but that was exactly what i was looking for thanks.

Thanks for all the tips guys been a great help as i was struggling on what to do with prof" points when creating a char, like i say me new to all this, must say it's a great game.

Oh i have the throne of ball aswell should i install that straight away or after i have finished shadows of amn?At the moment both are installed and not sure if i should have done this, would it have effected anything in the shadows of amn?Like overwrite certain quests and stuff?

Thanks for help guys.

since you have both SoA and ToB installed now, I'd say go ahead playing that; you can take your party all the way from SoA to ToB.
but make sure downloading and installing the latest ToB official patches (the order of installation -- SoA -> ToB -> ToB patch v. 26498 -> ToB patch v. 26499). Without the patches, you'll be plagued by annoying bugs.
True, but if you mistake Studded Leather for Leather & switch to a Piercing weapon, you've gone from expecting a +2 to getting a -1. If you can't tell the difference between Chain Mail & Splint Mail, your Club may suffer a 4 point swing in To Hit modifier.

As for non-Fighter types, I agree. If you have no choice but to spread your proficiencies around, then you may as well spread your proficiencies around.
