I dunno how people enjoy reading when they're going to so much trouble to keep the spine intact - how do you read the inner edges of the pages?! I like to open out my books flat.

I would never dog-ear a page though. Nothing worse. I hate it when some pages have been folded down during printing and then when you fold them out they have a big sticking out bit so you have to either cut it off or leave them folded

well I dont go to the middle and break the spine, I will flatten out pages if they are being annoying and keep flicking back, but I usually just hold my book so that it doesn't irritate me.

They will break through use for me, not through direct intent. I used to keep books pristine but now I even ...gasp... write notes in the margins ECT particularly with poetry or reference material.

Actually, that's one of my pet peeves. I'm a certified bookaholic (I have about 1,200 of my own) and really hate it when the spines get broken, the pages get folded or (even worse) somebody write notes in them. If I could afford it I'd buy all my books new.

I guess to me it's almost a sign of disrespect to 'injure' a book (don't take that personally); it's just the way I was raised I guess.

I like to try to read a book without breaking the spine if I can. I did used to fold the pages of a book though.

No, I never break the spine. I do sometimes open the book from both sides and then go towards the middle from both sides, so that the spine doesn't break but the book is easier to open. But I hate it when people do it to my books! I had a school book with me once to class, and my classmate asked if she could look something up. She took the book, opened it in the middle, and opened it WIDE. She made a line down the spine... I felt like screaming! And I always try to keep my books nice and clean...

Btw, why do some people write in library books? I once found a shopping list written in the margins... And people marking with marker pens and normals pens, underlining, folding pages, etc.
