I'll admit, before I start to read any paperback, I always find the middle, then turn the book back in on itself to break the spine. If it's particularly thick I'll even go to quarters so I have 3 folds in the spine. The only time I don't is if I've borrowed a book from someone else and the spine isn't broken. I find reading books where you can't open the book up properly really wrecks my enjoyment! Plus I think a bookshelf with a bunch of pristine novels looks like they've never been read, give me a well-thumbed tome over a brand new book anyday . What about you?

Can't say that I do. Most of the books I read are fairly short (200-300ish pages), with the exception of a few. Either way, I don't make it a habit to "break the spine." Though, I will say, that by the time I finish, most of the books have a slight crease in them.

both answers..only on my own books I agree with you, if you can not open it, how can you read it? and forget bookmarks, they are either to long, or fall out to easy, so I just bend the corner so I do not lose my place funny thing on that though, one time, my husband was reading a book, I got tired of waiting for him to finish it so I read it while he was at work so there were 2 different "marked" pages at any given time

I break them in paperback schoolbooks that otherwise tend to keep closing, these are my own often (if they're not often the previous owner had done it already). I don't mark where I am by folding though.

I answered for the both questions 'no'. I have an issue with breaking the spines of books, I still like them to look new...I know I'm weird

I don't like breaking the spine, I would rather keep it looking like it was before I started reading it.

Yeah I can't break the spine of books either, I feel like I'm wrecking them. I like the pristine appearance of new novels, and I love smelling the pages.

Hmmm, is it the smell of the pages that is the attraction, or is it the binding glue?

*backs away, holding his own pristine copy of book he is currently reading in front of his face like a shield*

Not usually, no! I use a bookmark to hold my place and I actually try NOT to crease the spines.

Love hardback books but usually don't spend the money on them these days. I wait til they come out in paperback, which is harder to keep 'pristine'!
