Tolkien. after so many re reads there is still something new you missed before, a hint or a subtle sub plot. I could not understand Tom bombadil as a young man but now I find him the most intresting character.

Eddings and Rowlings come next.

Indeed. The best thing about his novels is the constant warfare

Frankly it stumps me to see the likes of R.A. Salvatore even mentioned in the same sentence as Tolkien.... but each to their own.

I don't read a lot of fantasy, but the authors I like most that have written fantasy-like things are J.R.R. Tolkien, Mervyn Peake, Terry Pratchett, Iain M. Banks, Edgar Allen Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, C.S. Lewis, Robin Hobb and Tad Williams (purely for Otherland though, his other books I group with most fantasy authors: amusing but not of great literary value). Oh, and of Feist I thought the books about Mara and the Empire were well done. The rest was just another load of farmboy-saves-the-world-and-becomes-most-powerful-being-in-the-universe-and-then-author-decides-to-make-many-more-books-about-farmmunchkin-because-he-needs-a-new-car drivel. Wow! What a plot! So, when's your series coming out about your Übermunchkin, Melumunchkin? Will it be a standard 200 - 300 pages or are we talking Rowlingesque mega-volume?

Where in the Nine Hells did you get the idea that I am planning to write a book, Night? Contrary to some other people, I at least have enough humility and sense of reality to recognise I would be no good at writing books (although I admit anyone could write some of the drivel that actually makes it to print these days).
If there ever comes a point in my life where I think I could write something on an equal level with say Ian McEwan, A.S. Byatt, Italo Calvino, Thomas Pynchon or Umberto Eco, I'll get back to you...

But you had such a great plot idea! Does this mean you don't have a release date liebchen? (did I get it right?) I was so hoping that it would be a neo-Gothic, Fantasy meets Romancesmutt novel. Your alter-ego, Melumunchkin, would conquer the known universe while putting CPT Kirk and Scarlet O'Hara to shame! Why should Über Greenwood/Elminster have all the fun?

Puweeesse! I'll make you famous!
