IMO, Star Wars Episode 4, 5 and 6; not the crappy rip-off Episode 1 and 2.

Oh look, 100% of voters agree with me...wait I AM 100% of the voters. Movie making technology aside, star wars is better due to the groundbreaking attention paid to the new genre. LOTR is a gem among many. True, a better gem than the others...

edit: Well, I WAS 100% of the voters until the HUGE lag that just hit me on IW.

The technology behind LotR is lightyears ahead of anything Lucas has done in the recent star wars movies. The Massive program alone is a huge leap forward. Massive is what is used to create the huge battle scenes. Each solider has it's own AI sub-routine that controls it's actions. They simply have to program in the basic moves (using motion capture) of each race, give them 'stats', and let em loose. The AI controls all the interactions giving the battles a very true look and feel.

Sci Fi was not a new genre then Star Wars was released, has was fantasy when LotR was released. SW made sci fi respectable opening the doors for other great scifi movies like Blade Runner and Alien. Hopefully with the success of LotR top notch writers and directors will start making comprable fantasy movies as well.

LOL. I voted for LOTR, because it is a better movie, both in character depth, cinematography, and special effects than any of the Star Wars. Interestilngly, my young son has just gotten into Star Wars, and he much prefers Episodes 5 and 6, just as I do.

I enjoyed them both, but LoTR was a MUCH better movie overall. It had... get this!... it had a PLOT! Can you imagine? George Lucas aught to look into this PLOT thing, becuase it's then next big thing coming in Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

I think that the difference between the two is totally contained in the quality of the origonal material. LoTR is.. well... LOTR... Tolkien. Star Wars was written by a guy who wanted to make movies. It shows.

This is my opinion as well. A movie based on a well-written book, as long as it is adapted well, will almost always have a better plot.
