The best thing I've found is using an external hard drive for file transfers and generally holding things for quick access that I don't want taking up space on my hard-drive (game saves, for one). Of course, you just bought a PC and probably weren't looking to spend more money, but I can't imagine being unhappy with an extra, portable 80 gigs on top of my rig.

From that point, you'll be transferring to/from the drive rather than computers.

Welcome to the future, clouds.
I'm getting my new system tomorrow... I can't wait to get rid of this beast!
Does anyone know of a good way to transfer files from one computer to another? Burning CD's work, or is there a less time consuming way to do things?
It falls under burning CDs, but if you use a program like WinRAR or WinACE to compress the files, you can use a lot less CDs, and consequently, time. Or you could just throw a quick network together and transfer files that way.

I got an upgrade recently, and I'm loving it. F.E.A.R. on maxed settings is something to behold.
I found little difference in compressing files in order to use less space when burning to a cd. Maybe 1mb in difference on like 703mb movies (I was trying to make them fit on the cd and couldn't shave off what I wanted no matter what). Is it just movie files that don't compress very well or is this normal? Or is there some secret I've yet to uncover about good compression procedures. I've tried win ace, rar and zip and tried almost all settings (the ones that take longer etc.) and I notice little to no change. Anyone have experience with this?

Well, I just quickly experimented with WinRAR. I set the Mode to Best, and then compressed a 2.35 MB folder (Call of Duty DOCs folder, if you needed that bit of irrelevance ) into a 1.65 MB RAR file. That's a pretty good compression rate of about 70% the size of the original. Your issue may be a result of movie files, I'm not knowledgeable enough about these things to know.

Well I just want to move my entire sim city plugins folder in big hoop, so I don't have to redownload everything. That's at least a gig. Then there's my pictures which I absolutely NEED to have... my computer is the only one that has all of them from my families trips and stuff. That's probably 2 gigs. So i guess I could use 2 or 3 CD's but I was trying to find a better way. Would a USB drive thing work?

Personally, Sir G, I connect 'em over a network and away we go. Share the directory, open the firewall slightly, drag 'em in Windows Explorer, and go have dinner or something. It will take a while... but it's pretty painless.

You could use a thumb drive, but you'd have to get one that's at least a couple of gig. Too much hassle and expense.

If you have a Creative Zen Touch (was it you who said you had one, when I was buying?) or an iPod, you should be able to use it as an external hard drive to transfer files across.

Yep, easiest ways are MP3 player, external HDD, Network, or Straight Firewire / USB connection if the computers are near each other.
