Yeah, that'll really teach him to act like some sort of brattish adolescent, and is a very reasonable response to some insignificant verbal conflict with someone below the legal age of drinking.

Sorry about not joining in with the rest of the angry mob by the way, I accidently left my pitchfork at home this morning.

If memory serves, gasoline has a flash point of -40 Celsuis (or Farenheit for that matter) Above that temperature, it will ignite given oxygen and an ignition source.

Even something as simple as an old spark plug wire that is leaking electricity can provide the necessary ignition. In drier climates the static build-up that is even released with that quick zap that you feel when touching something metal is also enough to cause ignition.

There's a reason why you should turn off your ignition and close your doors when re-fueling a vehicle. Although highly unlikely, if a station was to go up, the blast from tens of thousands of litres of fuel would likely wipe out quite a number of city blocks.

Zebo, even if the gasoline was to ignite, it would not hollywoodishly explode in a giant ball of fire. There needs to be about 1.4% to 7.6% of gasoline in air for it to burn. The fuel stored underground would not explode, and neither would the car's gas tank. It might be dangerous if you first spill spill some gasoline on the ground, wait a few seconds for it to vaporize, and then light it.

A self-service station in our area had a fire many years ago. I don't recall the details, but a friend of mine worked the register there and said that a guy went up in flames while pumping gas. His car exploded as well. But if I remember correctly he tossed a cigarette on the ground under the car and might have hit some fuel on the ground or the spark may have ignited the fumes as he filled his tank.

You are right about that. But the big problem comes when people panic and pull out the nozzle and do not let it go. Then things go wrong fast. I have seen a few videos through work about this. And when this happens you get fireballs.

I remember that speach from my high school Auto shop classes, they had a gutter below the floor line to catch gas fumes and channel them outside and the most interesting part to me was that lighting a match in the gutter would not work because there usually wasn't enough O2 present to ignite, let alone catch the fumes, however if you dropped a match into it it would ignite the fumes as it passed through the correct air/fuel mixture and there would be... problems.
