I may get alot of heat for this one, but me, I am Politcly Incorect. Call me a racist or whatever you want, frankly I dont care what you think of me. I jsut find it more pratical to be Incorect.
I mean whats easyer, Afircan-American or Black, I think you can figure that out. And people found it racist and offensive when somone was not being Politcly Correct. Well I think it is to be Politcly Correct. No one calls me a Irish-American or German-American. No one says French-American No one says Russain-American You get my point, hopfully..

i think Grand-Ranger has a point. calling an African-American a black person doesnt mean that you are a racist it just means that thay are too lazt to say the politickly correct verson!!! as that famouse president (i caunt remember his name) once said "I have a dream" (actually i caunt remember the reast of the quote but im sure you do)
so quit yning about being singled out, its not only the white community that singles black people out but the black community singles itselfe out as well. as thay say "it takes two to tango"

quote: umm actually he wasnt a president, he was a civil rights speaker named Martin Luther King Jr. and i myself am not politically correct in that i go out of my way to accomodate the 'special names' created for other races and nationalities, however i dont use racial slurs. about the worst ive ever done is call someone black. they call me white, who cares? until they call me Czech-American instead of 'white', 'cracker', or whatever else they call me, they get black. and im against affirmative action too. its just another form of racism. |

Regarding racial names...
It all depends whether you mean to offend or not, and whether the other person perceives an offense. I think most people don't mind being called black, white, etc. if the person saying it is literally giving a physical description and not being derogatory.

But back to my point all Afican-Americans are black, unless you cant an Eygption(Or somwhere up there)-American an African-American. Wow, this poll has overnight equaled the posts of my sports poll. First of all I would like to say that I despise prejudice and would never deliberately offend someone or hurt their feelings, so if I do so to anyone with this I sincerely apologize.
I absolutely refuse to use the term african-american. I have three reasons. First, unless you were born in Africa and emigrated to the US, you are not African-american. You're just plain American. And that is really all that needs to be said. It makes no difference what the colour of your skin is. Second, if you were born in Africa it would be more accurate to use the name of the country than to generalize about the continent. I've heard of Polish-American but never European-American. To generalize is to say that all of Africa is the same, and I'm sure its inhabitants will tell you it's not. Third, I'm Canadian. Those of 'african descent' in my country are not African-american. I'll use African-Canadian if they insist, but African-American is not accurate. Why are races treated so differently? 'Races' don't really even exist - we're all one race, we just have different features. I don't expect to be singled out for the colour of my eyes or hair, why should skin be any different? Over time (especially in North America) we have all 'inter-bred' to the point where there are few with 'pure' bloodlines anyway. As someone else (I forget who) said, it's all about whether offence was intended or received. Let's face it, a person can say 'African-American' in such a way as to be offensive. Some words, obviously, were created with the express purpose of being offensive (like that horrible term ■■■■■■). Black is not one of them. And besides, most 'black' people I've seen are pretty brown. And I'm closer to pink or peach than white. |

quote: Well, Grand-Ranger, you are in luck, because I would never call anyone white trash, though clearly you would, since you mention that not all Americans are white trash you obviously consider some are. The point I was making that you obviously missed, is that political correctness is not what's most convenient for you, or what is clear to you, eg all African Americans are black. Political correctness is about respect, and using terms to refer to a person or group of people that they do not consider to be derogatory, demeaning or insulting. It is also about not using labels that define a person or group of people by some characteristic rather than as first and foremost, people. If Americans with dark skin want to acknowledge the fact that but for the actions of white people who took them from their home countries and used them as slaves in a foreign land, thus wish to be called African Americans, then that is their perogative. It is not your place to decide what you will call them determined by what is most easy for you. I was reading an interview with Mohammud Ali the other day, and he mentioned the epiphany he had when he first heard the term African American - it was a revelation to him that made sense - all other ethnic groups, Chinese, American, French etc were known by a term that indicated their country, black Americans were known as blacks, or negroes. Likewise calling a person with black skin black, or a person with schizophrenia a schizophrenic is not politically correct because you are labelling them by some characteristic and denying that they are a person. It may be more time consuming for you, but the respectful and polite way to address them is as a person with whatever the characteristic is.

Hear, hear! Huzzah, Aelia Jusa! I second everything you said!
However, I do reserve the right as an American to call any of my fellow Americans white trash when they demonstrate the illiterate, unkempt, shallow-minded and poor-spirited type of display that has encouraged other countries to label certain of our folks "ugly Americans". Oh, and by the way, the term is spelled "politically correct" or "politically incorrect". Let's try to impress others with how well Americans are educated, for a change. |
