Is the Equilizer worth all the trouble of finding it? Those Mind Flayers sound pretty nasty.

It depends.
If you do the underdark quickly and you leave most quests for later then yes the equalizer is pretty good.
If not then you get to find other swords better than the equalizer.

In SoA none except blackrazor.
Well maybe Namarra+2 is a good one.Another good possibility is adjatha the drinker.
The only problem is that these longswords are +2 only.

No, the suckqualizer is not worth it. Many dangerous enemies are neutrals in some sense. Golems are TN - and it's golems who is waiting for you in Suldanesellar! Demons and rakshasas can also be TN. A magical sword created by Enchanted Weapon spell is often more useful than the suckqualizer. The only place (in chapter 6 and 7) where the suckqualizer really helps is the Bodhi's Lair - all vampires (except Bodhi itself) are CE.
Therefore, collect the parts of the suckqualizer - if they come in your way, store them somewhere - if you have enough room for them, and create the suckqualizer - if you do not know what to do with all your money in Chapter 6. Always think twice whether to equip the suckqualizer or whether to equip a more suitable weapon.

The Equalizer is a good longsword, indeed, but not so good that it deserves to be split up in parts. So my answer is no, it is not worth the trouble.

Willard, IMO, these are all better longswords:
-Daystar (atleast when fighting undead)
-Blackrazor
-Angurvadal (ToB)
-Answerer (ToB)

Looking for a Long Sword?

Personal SoA favourite,

Blade of Roses +3.

Notable ones obtainable before Chapter 4,

Flame Tongue, Daystar and Blade of Roses.
