I have returned to Ulgarth's Beard from Durlag's Tower...immediately a wizard demands 'soul taker'...I won't give it up and a battle ensues...a rather nasty one (I had to reload a couple of times). I finish him and others off and proceed to a door up some stairs with another cult guard near it...he too is unfriendly and yet another group of cultists try to put a big hurtin on us! We did win this battle too, but in the process caused the dwarf and others to get killed and lost a ton of reputation points! So I 'quit'and decided to try to find out if there is something else I can do to get by the guard to go below...I assume the Tenari is down there somewhere...help please.

I'm not sure why your rep dropped from the fight outside the house located just a bit to the southwest of the inn. Did an innocent get killed by a fireball blast or something?

I can tell you how to defeat that unholy beast from the Abyss. It is one of the toughest battles in the game. It's a great battle. But go ahead and head on down there and try the battle out. Reload or resurrect your dwarf, whichever, but you are going to need every hand available. Prepare as best you can with spells and potions. Let me know if you want to be spoiled re: strategy.

The first time I battled, my rep went down, too, it was because my Cloud hurt a Commoner. Try not to use area of affect spells, and I would turn AI off for this battle, just in case your group accidentally attacks an innocent bystander.

Okay, well first, as you have probably discovered, Aec will respawn if you kill him before the cultists are killed. So you have to kill the cultists first.

1) Buy the 4 potions of mirrored eyes at the inn and give them to your front line fighters.
2) Potion up and cast all defensive spells. Among these I included Free Action and Resist Fear. Have Remove Fear prepared. See 6 below; make one character invisible.
3) After appearing downstairs pause immediately (right before dialogue).
4) Target a couple of gangs of monsters to appear around Aec with wand.
5) Target the cult leader who is standing right in front of you and kill her quickly (she's not that hard to kill).
From this point onward there are several ways but this is the one I liked the best:
6) With either a stealthed thief or invisibilized character wearing the cloak of Algernon walk around the room and charm each of the cultists and direct them to attack Aec.
7) Aec will ignore your party as he fights the summoned monsters and the cultists. When all of the cultists are killed then begin your attack on him. Honestly, I can't remember exactly how I took him down, but he is much easier to kill when all of the cultists are dead. Just keep laying monsters and skellies on him to keep him busy. He has magic resistance but he does eventually go down from magic arrows and wands (IIRC, especially the Wand of Heavens).

Hah! I love that tactic. Hadn't thought of charming the cultists but I will definately try it out later today. I spent most of yesterday attempting to kill the beast...got pretty close only to run out of heal potions...thanks for the info!
