Has anyone got the knack of it yet? Or better still, does anyone know of any console command trickery to help me with precisely placing my trinkets without knocking everything else off my shelves and generally getting unreasonably frustrated? There must be some tricks. Even a simple command to "stand" or "invert" items will make my character's life so much more bearable. I've got the "hokey pokey" sussed.

An idea just sprung to mind, but I didn't test it. Would it work if you turned on the no clipping cheat?

Actually, it probably would. After placing it, turn it off, and it stays, no muss, no fuss.

I like to try and grab things toward the top, and wriggle them around until they're standing up where I want them...no real trick to it, you just need a guess as to where the item's center of mass is, and decent depth perception...the latter of which I've found is a bit more difficult in the game that you'd think...

Some items, once inverted, are bloody impossible to stand upright. I have to sling 'em around the room to get them to land upright, and then try again. Which is why i'm chasing the command. Usually if i can pick it up in the right way, i can use the w, s, a, d keys to walk it into the spot i want it. The inertia levels itself out once i stop.

I'll have a try at the no clipping and see if that helps.

Damn straight. It'd be wonderful if the object generated a shadow directly below it so you get a better idea of exactly where it's gonna fall when you drop it. I've lost count of how many times i've thought something was in the right place, only to have it fall completely off the shelf.

For those of you with mage skills There are a number of Telekinesis spells you
can use to help in the placement of most Items. I use Remote Manipulation it
gives Telekinesis of 10 feet for 20 seconds and only costs 5 Mana. I also use
Psychic Motion which gives you telekinesis of 20 feet for 30 seconds and only
costs 12 mana. They both let you grab the center of any Item then push the item
you wish to upright against the edge of any table edge, shelf edge, a book on
a table or any stationary item and flip it over into the upright position useing
the left and right mouse buttons and the mouse ball to move the item in and out
left and right. Then when your ready to release just press the left & right
mouse buttons at the same time. I will set an Item down and look at it and if
it needs to be pushed back from the edge you use the left mouse button and it
moves away from you and when it's to far back in the shelf You press the right
mouse button to pull it toward you. Useing the "Z" button has alot to be desired
on it's own so try Telekinesis after you get an Item in the general area that
you want it in and let magic do the rest.
you can throw an Item about 30 feet useing Telekinesis too. just bring the
Item to you useing the right button then press the left button down and while
the item is moving away from you hit the right button on the mouse while the
left is still pressed and the item will go flying like a baseball at a batter.
In fact I have thrown things right though walls and doors so practice.
I knocked a guard off a bridge with a pumpkin while I was playing and throwing
it around. LOL
