OK. What gives? I was playing a game and my gang was only at level four. I level them all at the same time at the same level. Anyway, I kept running into robots that were 17th and 19th level. Needless to say...they destroyed my party every battle. It must be a bug. I'm starting from scratch and downloaded another patch (the latest from a different site) to see if this clears up the problem. I have played in the past--and this never happened before. Weird.

I had the same problem recently, but the critters were even higher. Humanoids I guess were the worst. If you can make it to Antoine's armor or other safe haven in Arnika with a closeable door, rest for a time or two. They went away and the monster level dropped back to near equal to my party.

Roboghost,

You are not the first to experience the problem of extremely high-level savant troopers or humanoids in Arnika. From my own experience and what I have read in the forums, the problem relates to holding off level-ups until you get into Arnika.

When I hold-off on leveling up (to make Arnika road easier for small new party), nowadays I always have them level up just _before_ entering Arnika. That way there is not the experience/level mismatch which confuses the balanced-monster logic within Arnika.

Thanks all. In my past games, I had the same level when I entered Arnika, but probably didn't have as many experience points. It looks like that is the key. I'll level them all to 5th before I enter Arnika this time around and keep the experience points down (I'm a random item freak...I try to get what I want and high skills makes it easy at low levels. I'll still cheat with the random items, but suffer with less skill points [damn...make me earn them then]). That will probably do the trick (I hope).

I have seen this strategy of holding off on level-ups suggested a number of times and there is simply no need for it. Once your player skills improve a bit you will have no trouble with rats, disease, long, slow battles or getting to Arnika. Just be patient with yourself and enjoy the game. A level-up, IMO, is a cause for celebration. You made it to the next level! By holding off you "stunt" your growth in a sense because you face whimpy monsters relative to the level you have earned. Yeah, when first facing the open road even experienced players get to civilization ASAP (Arnika or base camp), but other than that... no worries.

If that is "just not happening" for you, then play on normal or easy for a few games. I didn't when I first began, but should have. It made the game difficult and frustrating, and I almost gave up and put it back on the shelf. One of the beauties of W8 is that there is much to know about it and, no matter how skilled you already are, you can get (a lot) better at it. This advice above is pretty basic, I'm not that good a player really, so don't expect it will take you a long time to reach that.

If you want to hold off on level-ups, and find that fun... go for it. I'm not surprised, however, that this option did not get as much play-testing and so the game still has some (sound's like real) bugs associated with that, that several of you are finding.

EEWorzelle, I agree 110%. I never hold off on level-ups. When any of my
party gains enough xp to level, I stop in my tracks and do it. If that
means more difficult encounters I say "bring 'em on". More xp for me.

I have made it to Arnika by leveling up as fast as I can. But it is a real challenge. Some may prefer to hold off going past 3 or 4 until Arnika. I head for the Armory, go in the room with the chest, and level up with door closed. If the monsters are ridiculously difficult, rest awhile. Each has their own strategy.

I never hold off my levels, when I can level up I level up. However, I tend to stay at arnika road to train up my skills as the monsters there are easier.

I generally enter Arnika on level 6 or 7. Another thing I do to stay alive is go around with the patrol and go by the monastery for backup.
