My friend lent me Neverwinter Nights, to see if it would work on my computer, and it work VERY well.
I'm only playing in single player, because it's his game and I don't want to use his cd-key, but I'm getting no lag at all, and the loading times are fast. Here's my computer: Intel Celeron Pentium II 333 MHZ 394 Megs SDRAM ATI 128 Megs DDRAM video card So I suggest to give the game a try. Most of the times, video games still work very well below the system requirements. With the same computer, I can play Warcraft III with the max resolution, the max quality in texture and get no lag at all, except when there's a ridicullous number of units casting spells in the same screen, and I can play Arx Fatalis in 800x600 without lag too.

I agree. I played IWD1 and BG1 with a dinosaur of a system which was well below the system requirements and it played fine with most settings maxed out. I know alot of people have played NWN's successfully (and still do) with systems that are below par according to the requirements.

it must be your vid card then, I was trying to run it on a P3 500MHz with 512MB RAM and a 16MB TNT card, and it was unbelievably slow most of the time (minimum specs were for a 16MB TNT2 on the box)

Yes, the video card play a huge part in any 3d polygon based game. As soon I see one, I know it will work on my computer even before trying it.
I paid my card 100$ Canadian, so it must be around 60-80 USD. You should really consider buying a new one.

The original TNT is particularly bad, it was part of the very first generation of 3d cards, and the jump to TNT2 was almost as big as the jump from SVGA to 3D accelerated.
Anyway, in general, if the game is in 3D the performance hit from a below-spec 3D card will be much more serious than the hit from a below-spec CPU. RAM is important as well.

That is the down side to not building it yourself. Although companies out there are getting better about leaving room to upgrade the systems. You might want to check out www.pricewatch.com if you are looking for the rest of the parts to put it together.
I agree BTW the video card can make a huge difference in playing games on your computer. There are a bunch of people out there playing NWN that have 256 Megs of RAM in their system and now you can get that on just your video card. I wonder what NWN will look like in ten years when we play it on our systems then? Granamere [ 08-13-2003, 11:48 AM: Message edited by: Granamere ] |
