Hi Folks

That Black Dragon keeps kicking my butt and I can't seem to talk him into taking my items in exchange for the goblet. I've got Imoen, Keldorn, Nalia, Jaheira, Valygar, and a Ranger half-elf.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Heh... By that time I had no trouble with him at all! Let's see...

Try some magic tactics listed here, and check Dundee's Newcomers thread for the link in his signature. IIRC, it had dragon-slaying tips.

Let's see what I can think of by myself:
  1. Load a Spelltrigger with Lover Resistances, load sequencer with a greater malison and, say, pierce magic (also lovers resistances). Fire it all, and then with all your mages cast as many Finger s Of Death as possible. In my case, the beast died after the first one.
  2. Set as many traps aroun him as possible. Then surround him with fighters, and give them the command to start slashing. Traps will go off once it turns hostile, thus damaging the creature. The point of surrounding the beast is that if it uses its Wing Buffet not everybody will be knocked back. Provide a decent healing, and provide a decent supporting firepower with your mages. The beast will fall.
  3. Cast THAC0-boosting spells on your cleric (DUHM will also help. I used Righteous Magic), then cast Harm. Save and try to hit the beast. If succesful, it will leave the dragon with mere 1 hit point. So a Magic Missile will finish the rest
There are infinite tactics, try to be inventive. And, as those hints, that appear while the game loads a new area, say, "changing tactics will often make an 'impossible' fight a merely challenging. Explore all options available" Good luck!

And,

Welcome to IronWorks!

I just tried to Kick its scaly *****. It worked fine to.

The evil little thing just keeled over and died after my caracter, mincs and Keldorn bashed it a few times with big swords.

Oh and my caracter was a level 18 cavalier with dragonscale shield, dragonslayer sword, dragonscale shield and a red dragon plate armour. THat might have been the trick.

By the note, this caracter killed every dragon in the game, including ToB almost single handed. the combo above is downright cruel when facing dragons.

with Jaheira you can cast insect swarm/plague it's great for keeping him from gettting spells off, at this level hitting him shouldn't be a problem, and make sure to let summons take the brunt of the assault letting your fighters hit him from the sides, Keldorn should use his dispel magic ability, then his true seeing, the dispel will take out many of his spell protections, minsc should hit him hard and fast, Valygar should haste himself (and anyone nearby) and lay the smack down on him. Imoen should use the spells mentioned above, (lower resistance, pierce magic, greater malison, and then proceed to keep using breach, and similar spells to take out his stoneskins, and other combat protection spells).

mountain bears, or fire elementals from Jaheira are great for cannon fodder, as are spiders from Imoen, area affect spells like Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting are perfect as they do massive damage, and don't hurt the friendly units, skeleton warriors from Imoen should come in after the bears and elementals start dying off, and basically just keep imoen and Jaheira back, using wave tactics so you can get your characters back to heal from J, while Imoen keeps summons ready to go into the fight.

hope this helps
