eeeppp...

Perhaps you know that sinking feeling when a single keystroke accidentally destroys hours of work. Now imagine wiping out a disk drive containing information for an account worth $US38 billion ($A48 billion).
-
-

That's what happened to a computer technician reformatting a disk drive at the Alaska Department of Revenue. While doing routine maintenance work, the technician accidentally deleted applicant information for an oil-funded account - one of Alaska residents' biggest perks - and mistakenly reformatted the backup drive, as well.
-
There was still hope, until the department discovered its third line of defence, backup tapes, were unreadable.

If he just deleted something it should be easily recoverable.

I read about this too. It is recoverable, but would cost a lot of labor hours, including thousands of dollars to pay for those hours.

It was recovered... that took place last summer (July, I think), and by the end of August, they had recreated everything from the original paper and forms.

Cost over $200,000... and they haven't blamed or fired anyone.

Just goes to show the value of a good backup...

$200,000 to revover $48 Billion seems pretty good.

If the technician could delete it so easy in the first place, the system sucks. What he really should have done is transfer it all to a swiss acount in his name THEN delete it.

Hallo from Zurich Suckers!
