Optimist
1) One who usually expects a favorable outcome.
2) A believer in philosophical optimism.

Pessimist
1) A tendency to stress the negative or unfavorable or to take the gloomiest possible view: “We have seen too much defeatism, too much pessimism, too much of a negative approach” (Margo Jones).
2) The doctrine or belief that this is the worst of all possible worlds and that all things ultimately tend toward evil.
3) The doctrine or belief that the evil in the world outweighs the good.

Personally, I'm a bit of a pessimist. If you don't expect anything, you never get disappointed, and if it DOES happen, you get a nice surprise. On the other hand, confidence and belief is usually the key to making things work.

I'm an optimist, and also I am a very good persuader! I can usually get my own way when I want.

It depends who I am with and what the issue is. My mother is quite pessimistic, so with her I find myself overly optimistic or with at least a sort of 'well if it goes wrong it won't be that bad' sort of attitude. Similarly with a friend of mine who is quite negative and depressing to be around at times, I find myself compensating for her pessimism with optimism. When it comes to issues that concern me, e.g., what mark will I get for this subject etc., however, I tend to be a little more pessimistic, well, not pessimistic so much as I think it will be bad, but while I know logically it should all turn out okay, I worry a lot that it won't.

So I guess I'm basically optimistic, but a worrier, but more optimistic and less worrying when around people who are quite pessimistic.

I am a bit inbetween them, so I chose a bit of both, on most things I will look at the worst possible thing for a while, then suddenly see the brighter picture

I'm a pessimist. I can predict doom and gloom about something before they even happen yet. imagine that.

I'm a bit of both. Depending on the situation depends if I look on the good side or the bad side.

I agree with Jaradu: if you don't expect anything to happen and it doesn't your not disappointed, and if it does you get a nice surprise!
