I got a letter today from the Inernational Society of Poets, and I have been nominated for Poet of the Year, 2006. I'm freaking out. I don't know if I have to be present to win, the paper doesn't say, but the grand prize is 20,000.00, plus a 10,000.00 publishing contract. Arrrgggghhhh!!! I'm so hoping I need not be present to win. I won't be able to go, there's no way I can afford the Hotel, or the trip to Vegas. It's nice to be nominated though. I never knew I had it in me.

I'm pretty sure that would be a violation of the TOS. But the event costs 595.00 for three days, and doesn't cover travel, or hotel...That's a lot of donations. I'm just honored to have been nominated.

Ermmm... hate to be the bearer of bad news, Robert, but you may want to google for "international society of poets". One excerpt:

Quote:
A Maryland firm that has garnered a national reputation for preying upon unsuspecting victims goes by the names the National Library of Poetry, the International Library of Poetry, the International Society of Poets, and the International Poetry Hall of Fame.

In addition to providing press releases to the media, they also advertise poetry contests in many magazines as well as at their web site, www.poetry.com. The advertisements, press releases and web banners claim up to $58,000 in prizes will be awarded in the contests.

After answering an ad in a magazine and submitting your poem, you are notified that your poem will be included in a special edition of their anthology. The carefully worded letter takes great pains to assure you that you do not have to make any purchases, yet goes on to list a host of available 'options'. Some of the options are: $20 to add your biography, $29 to have your poem read onto audio tape or $38 to have it mounted on a plaque.

Sorry, dude. I think either Stormy or RevRuby ran into this a couple of years ago as well.

I remember this scam...and I am pretty sure it was Stormy.

I wish you the best in finding true and deserving fame, Rob.

Maybe they'll do a reality show where rockers get to go jam out and America will vote for you...

I think it was Stormy, too. I remember we wondered about the letter appearing out of nowhere once she entered a contest and someone checked on it.

Sorry about that, Robert, but like you said, at least you never paid them anything!

I did that once.
Actually, more than once.
Got the same letter twice.
Posted around fifty poems on that website.
I find the place useful in terms of having a site where I can actually show off some of my work, but that is about it.
Sorry you ended up almost getting sucked into that, RTB. It was a few good friends of mine who warned me off of going to "the special ceremony" they have.
