Dutch justice minister says using drugs on TV undesirable

Dutch Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner has described the smoking of heroin on a live television show as undesirable. A presenter plans to smoke heroin during a new Dutch chat show on sex and drugs called Spuiten en Slikken, a play on words meaning either 'Shooting up and Swallowing' or 'Ejaculating and Swallowing'.

The Christian Democrats, the largest governing party, had asked the minister to take legal measures against the show. Mr Donner said that although he objected to the programme, he could not prevent it since using small quantities of drugs is not a punishable offence.

The director of the station which is broadcasting the programme said it was not up to the minister to decide what was desirable.

Reviewing (hard-) drugs and sex on television (such is the point of the show) - acceptable of despicable? Or perhaps both? Opions?

Well...this sounds like that's the only point of the show...so despicable.

Doesn't that candy ass got something better to then interfering in what's on TV, like seeing to it that detainees stay detained for instance ?

Personally i feel that some ministers are too concerned with what's on TV, and that's really not what they are being paid for. I say let him shoot his heroin on TV, let everyone watch while that shit kicks in, so that everyone can see with their own eyes they should stay away from that crap as far as possible, it would be a very informative show.

And they should change the name into "zuigen en slikken", much more people would watch, i'm fairly sure of that.

Blimey, I thought the Dutch were only soft on soft drugs! My gut reaction is that this is not for television and I would also say that the minister has a point. It's one thing to say he should be keeping prisoners locked up but only a monkey would deny the link between drugs and crime so any attempt to trivialise drugs and make them more socially acceptable surely falls within his remit to oppose.

Johnny's got a good point. Let the dude stab it so all the kiddies can see the real effect. They see enough of the unreal when it comes to drugs on TV anyway. This is the first i've ever heard of a stunt like this on reality TV though.

Come on we do not need a show to see the effects of drugs on someone. This is the last thing we need to have airing accross the TV. I happen to be discraced with this. This is my thoughts and what I believe.

Why hide it, because it scares you ? You know why 80% of the people start shooting heroin ? Because they are curious, that's why. Showing how disgusting it is on TV will definitely prevent a number of people from giving it a try. You know that campaigns against drugs don't work, people make a habit of experimenting with the things others label as bad for you, they always do, just to be different. If you show the full effects of shooting heroin on TV it will have a better effect on people than spreading folders and wagging your finger.

Scared I am not even close to being scared. We have enough shit that goes on the dam telly. That we do not need some idiot showing kids how to shoot up. You think that these so called campaign do not show the bad side of the drugs? Well they do show the bad sides. As a parnet I do not want this crap on. Either way johnny this is where I stand. Trust me I see your point as well. But with the parents trying to build a postive foundation then having to deal with programs that show sex and drugs it is like taking 2 steps back.

What do they say in hollywood bad publicity is still good.

Let's agree to disagree then. You're wrong about the campaign though, it doesn't work. Maybe it works in Canada, but here it's misses it's target completely. Sometimes the only way to get people's attention is to hit them in the head with a sledgehammer (a famous quote from "Seven" ), and showing the effects of heroin on TV is such a sledgehammer.

And sex ? What's wrong with that ? Why shouldn't they show sex on tv ? Why is that such a friggin taboo in most countries ?

Edit: about creating a foundation...that would be creating an image of a world that doesn't exist. I would much rather see my kid prepared for anything, so it wouldn't come as a complete shock to him once he ventures into the real world. Better to be prepared than to be completely ignorant of the how it goes outthere. Wheter you like it or not, sooner or later your kid WILL get into a situation where he's confronted with sex and drugs.
