No, they are not making the software, but selling machines that come with no OS and are designed to be used with Linux and other open source software

Awesome

I've been searching the net for this very thing - Dell have just won themselves a customer!

They should´ve made comps and sold Windows seperately from the very beginning. The install process isn´t that long. But they seem to try to sell to "never used a comp before"-people, so....
But Dell, Compaq etc, they are all hard to upgrade, end when you do, the warranty explodes (but the warranty is a nice plus with Dell and Compaq etc).

For you linux guys... Suse 10.0 has just been released, I downloaded it via Bittorrent last night and will install it dual boot on my Athlon 64 system this afternoon... I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Yes, release version.

I Installed the 64 bit version last night on my Home Theater box (Athlon 64). Install went painlessly, I dropped in a spare HDD for it to use and it left my Media Center drive alone. Dual boot works perfectly. Couple minor issues, sound isn't working (ac97 on the mobo, it appears to be configured but I'd guess I'll have to figure out how to turn on the SPDIF output, I don't use the speaker outs). Didn't recognize my display (understandable, it's a Panasonic HD projector) and I had to manually edit the conf file to add 1280x720 (not painful if you're confortable editing config files). Also the default samba setup doesn't seem to know anything about windows AD Domains, so I'm going to have to figure out how to configure that to get access to the file server (and I'd also like to use it for login authentication... which I'm told it should be able to do).

Finally, there's something weird with the display settings applet... I can start in once but it doesn't want to start a second time without a reboot, hopefully that's not indicative of a more serious problem.

Re. the SPDIF output - it's not something as simple as enabling it in alsamixer or kmix?

Good luck with the rest of it and thanks for sharing
