I've done the "Return to Harper Hold" quests, and rescued Jaheria from the Harper base. But when I go to kill Bodhi, Jaheria doesn't get taken away. I know her circle is supposed to turn blue and she should leave, but she doesn't. The circle stays green. Why is this? BTW, the JaheriaRomanceActive variable is still 1.

I could be wrong, but my guess is that the romance isn't far enough along yet. In the latter stages of NPC romances, the RomanceActive variable is set at "2".

If you have a save game from before you go after Bodhi, try loading it and leaving it for a few hours, as I've heard that the advancement of the romance is based upon real time. You may have to rest some, too, as some of her dialog is triggered by resting.

BTW, the whole Jaheira romance is notoriously buggy in SoA. ToB supposedly fixes this, but I can neither confirm nor deny this as the one time I attempted this romance was before it came out. Attempted, but not completed, as one of the NPCs in the plot appeared but would not deliver the necessary lines to advance the story.

Anyway, I happened to remember something I saved off of USENET over a year ago, a kind of step by step guide to J's romance - you may be able to use it to give you an idea of how far the romance has advanced. I hope this helps....

_ BOOK OF JAHEIRA_
By Htn963
Price: proverbial two cents, maple syrup sold separately;

"Take my hand
take my Bhaal soul too
for I can't help
falling in love with you."
-- Ode to J. (with thanks to Elvis)

This is a long and arduous courtship, but once you're done, you'll
appreciate why the lady was more than worth it. Note that the Jaheira quests
can take place independent of the romance, but the reverse is not true.
Onward:

1) If romance is at all possible with Jaheira, her first spoken line
to you right after arriving at Atkatla's slum should be "Where to, fearless
leader?" If not, you're probably a dwarf or gnome, and ineligble (I'm not sure
about half-orc yet.) You can be rude to J. this once here and tell her to
"stow it", but the very next time you're rude again, it's over.

2) In the next few conversations, which takes place approximately once
every one hour of real time or 8 hours game time, J. will reminisce of past
times and old friends. She'll also dream of Khalid in your next two rest
periods. The second dream is foreshadowing and Khalid's spirit's blessing of
any possible romance.

3) First Harper Quest: during this period, you'll run into the poisoned
man which triggers the Xzar quest. It's best to do this quest before you
leave the city if you don't want to delay the next Harper quest.

(Of course, if J. also had a run-in with Baron Plover at the Sea Bounty
Inn in the Dock District, you need to do that quest too so you'll have a
living woman to love instead of a dead one; however, technically this is not a
prerequisite quest for the romance. You can also buy J a keepsake locket from
a merchant standing outside the Temple of Ogma here, but again, that's a sweet
option and not necessary if you happened to be a damn cheapskate who doesn't
want to part with 20g for this priceless woman.)

4) _Bandit Attack/Second Harper Quest: right after the dialog where Jaheira
asks you what you plan to do in the future after the adventuring's done and the
bones are weary, go rest in the wilderness. When you wake up, you'll be
ambushed by several bandits. The leader has a knife to J's throat holding her
hostage, so pick the "safe" options to give up your goods or to take J's place.
Acting macho and wanting to fight will hurt Jaheira and also blow the romance.
You'll end up fighting the bandits in any case, and right after you dispatch
them, Meronia will show up to call J away to the Harper.

J will come back to your party wherever you are after the next resting
period and ask you to go back with her to the Harper's Hold to meet Galvarey.
You do, and it seems Galvarey just wants to put you away to advance his Harper
status. J will side with you against this obvious injustice and you'll fight
him and his motley crew. There's some good rings and bracers here, an
incentive even for those not romancing J.

5) Third Harper Quest: after several dialogs of J and you reaffirming
your loyalty and friendship, Reviane and her band will show up to take
vengeance for Galvarey. If your rep was high enough (15 IIRC) Reviane will
take your word that it was really self-defense and go away. If not, well,
there's a few more nice rings and bracers for your party, but this band is
tougher than Galvarey.

6) First meeting with Dermin: after a dialog in which J feels an ill wind
in the air and asks you to walk beside her, Dermin, J's old Harper mentor, will
show up to express his disappointment at J and demand you give up; J stands by
you and renounces her Harper membership.

7) There comes now several dialogs of anguish and self-doubt on J's part ,
where J starts to question if your cause was worth giving up all that she's
ever known. It is _your_ turn now to show strength, patience, and loyalty and
to demonstrate that you deserve her.

8) Second meeting with Dermin/Fourth Harper Quest: this time, after the
notorious "How did that last battle made you feel?" dialog, Dermin shows up
and demand that J gives herself up for Harper execution to spare the rest of
the party from further attacks. She said she'll think about it despite your
protest, and at your next resting period in the wilderness, she's gone.

Elminster/"Terminsel" then makes his first appearance here and gives you
her note which he found and counsels you not to lose what is really important
-- in the note, J sends you hers and nature's love and asks you not to come
after her, but of course, you're smarter than that, right? So you run back to
the Harper Hold (no time limit in this quest actually) to find her upstairs and
tell her that you've lost too many important things already and that you won't
lose her too. It turns out that the Harpers here were renegade and not
legitimate, so you and J. are free to fight your way out. (Beware invisible
mercenaries in ambush back on the first floor.)

9) Final confrontation with Dermin/Last Harper quest: this, of course,
takes place outside _after_ the post-rest "dawning of our day" conversation,
which incidentally, contains one of the best corny pick-up lines I've ever
heard: "No sunrise can compare with your beauty in the moonlight."

You will know this battle is coming when J. says "Stop. Ready yourself."
Dermin now shows up with several lackey (watchout for the mage who can cast
chain lightning) and gets a withering scolding from J for being the true
betrayal of the Harper's philosophy -- that's my lady!

There will be a conversation right after this battle, where depending on
your choice of responses, J will either snicker and crack a remark that you
make her laugh too much for her own good, or ask you to give her some space to
deal with the turmoil of having killed her mentor.

10) Regardless, in your first resting period after killing Dermin, J.
will wearily say that she's seen enough of waking hours and you ask how can you
make her happy -- no, no, we're not quite at _that_ stage yet! She's still
quite angry about Dermin so give her space and time to work it out for several
more dialogs.

11) J's Wilderness Epiphany: right after J starts pulling out of her foul
mood with the dialog in which she remarks that you need not keep such a big
space between yourself and her anymore, go rest in the wilderness! J will wake
up, sees the beauty and balance that she had missed anew, and will realize that
her love for you is akin to her love for nature and is right.

12) Home stretch: in this penultimate dialog, J and you reflect on how
you got here and reaffirm your goal to take vengeance for Khalid and your other
comrades against Irenicus. Despite your pain and loss, the circumstances had
brought you closer together -- you remark that you'll make sure to thank
Irenicus before feeding him his own limbs, which J. finds sweet.

13) Last dialog/Consummation: after reaffirming your trust, respect,
loyalty, and friendship for each other, J asks you to stay the night with
her...if you wish. (Does anyone actually says no, here?) Pick a special place
for this night, preferably within the henges of the druid grove.

14) When you go back to Atkatla and traipse through a few city sections,
"Terminsel"/Elminster will show up to ask J, thus: you have given your heart
and loyalty to this man -- do you think you have done right, and would you
do exactly such again. To which J, replies, "without a doubt." J is
reinstated into the Harpers and given a nifty pin, which among other thing,
confers 100% immunity to electricity.

15). Hmm, so after all that, you're still half-expecting something bad
to surface and screw up your happiness with her, eh? Well, guess what,
besides the vampire quest which you'll rescue her from, there isn't! So to
those who prefer Aerie or Viconia, I say nyah nyah nyah...

FIN (for now, but really a work in progress)

Thanks. It's been a long time since the "Morning is pretty" speech and No Dermin... The only thing I didn't do is after rescuing her from the Harpers I didn't say the "I lost so many precious things, dont wanna lose you too" option, but chose the not so naueseating, but still nice, response. She still said morning was pretty and was glad she saw the sunrise, so i doubt that was a problem. :\ I guess I'll just leave it paused for a few more hours, or perhaps all night. Thanks (again)

Y'know, that's exactly the same problem as I had - no Dermin. I eventually found him in the Temple District close to the Order of the Radiant Hart. When I tried to talk with him, I got the old "too busy to converse" message. No amount of waiting would fix it, so I chalked it up to program bugs and got on with the adventure. I hope something similar hasn't happened to you.

I never had any issues whatsoever with the romance with Jaheira, so I can't comment on the "buggy" part - wasn't bugged for me. When I went throug the game the second time, I used then Baldurdash's fixes and it still worked well like a charm. Your romance is either not yet developed "far enough", or is bugged, or you did something, which made her "angry".

Must be a bug. I left it on all night, and this morning nothing happened. I rested and switched areas just to be sure.

<-- is sad

The bugs really discourage me, because I get so sick of reloading and hoping Dermin spawns this time, or whatever. I do know that we never had the "resting in the wilderness" talk, even though we have several times, but along came "Terminsel" anyway, and the romance ended. ::sighs:: Oh well.
