Can anyone advise me on the proper way to write a letter of cancellation of service to a company? I have called and told ADT Home Security that I will be dropping them to get another company to take their place at half the cost. I have to give them 30 days notice. In addition to calling, I have heard that a written notice should also be done, because ADT people have been known to be crooked little freaks when it comes to this. I want to make sure that I phrase the letter in a correct manner. Can somebody assist me with that?

I would draft something like this:

Dear sir or madam:

In compliance with the service agreement and to follow up on the phone message I left today, I am hereby giving you notice that I will cease using your service effective [date>. This meets the requirement of 30 days notice.

If there are any questions, contact me at [phone>

Sincerely,

Larry

Send it certified (so they have to sign for it) if you really want to be certain they have received it (and can't claim they didn't).

Note that if you say that you're switching for a lower price, that opens the door for them to meet that price. If you have already made up your mind, you'll want to stop that quick. If you haven't, and you're willing to reopen negotiations, that will do it for you.

You don't have to explain your reasons why... and they will ask you for them (in an attempt to retain you as a customer). You're not being unreasonable if you decline to give them a reason why.

Lol! Both are great suggestions,,,especially the Mad Mod title.

I wonder how that would be received?

I "did" tell them that they were too costly and they offered me a "non-contract" agreement to lower me to $19.99. I told them that there was two things wrong with that. One...a contract would prevent "them" from chnanging thier mind on the price and Two...I still had a better deal with $15.00/mo. from the other guys.

I have set up the switch -over already and have alerted them by phone that I am diconnecting earlier than the 30 days, but that I still agreed to pay for April's full month. The other service will connect me, but not charge me until May.

I'd say Bungleau has it spot on. And you should always try your luck with the old "I'm getting it cheaper elsewhere", as this often results in them dropping the price to keep you as a customer.

In your case, it seems it's too late.
