Ok, I can pretty much fix anything, but my SWEET Wife (After warning here many times NOT to put potato skin peels down the disposal) did it last night, and now she comes to MEEEEEE saying 'it's stopped up'. Hmmmm.

Anyway, I go to get the sink plunger, and plung it with nasty ass water in the sink (in the disposal side) and I plunge--then I hear this small waterfall under the sink. YEY! So I throw a pan under there, but it's leaking from the bottom of the disposal! How the hell is it doing THAT? It's not coming from the pipe! When I plunged it, did I suck a seal or rubber flange out of a socket or what?

Anyway, I go undo the water pipe that exits from the disposal, and god, it's FULL of damn potato peels.. Anyone know what it means when it's leaking from under the disposal--under meaning water coming out where the reset switch is, where the 'manual turner is too. I checked some sites on it, and it looks like I gotta replace it. Dunno. let me know. It's 13 years old now, so it may be time. it's a 1/2hp Kenmore. Kenmore--yuk.

Grimey pipe water is freaking gross, btw.

EEww.... can't say as I know much about the disposal but the water sounds mighty unpleasant.

Found this : http://www.diynet.com/diy/ha_maint_r...276823,00.html

They usually have good info on that site.

i suggest getting rid of it all together! we have had nothing but problems every place we have been with a disposal, penny's falling in, knives falling it, food getting stuck. also everywhere i went with an older disposal it let the water from the draining dishwasher back up into the sink, no matter how well plugged i had it, so i couldn't hand wash and use the dishwasher at the same time. iw as ecstatic to see no disposal in this place.

I had to replace ours this past year. It developed a hole in the side... not exactly sure how, but water poured out by the gallon when we used the sink.

Replacement was actually pretty easy (and pretty inexpensive), but I was fortunate enough to find the exact same model. You might be able to do the same thing... a different model may mean different hookups and such, which ups the complexity.

it means it is pretty much time to buy a new one
word of advice, never plunge a disposal, the pressuer it creates can break seals, and the parts inside. you probaby dislodged the blades and pulleys. hope you get it fixed.

Well, we can't afford a new one yet, (it's a 1/3hp, so it's like $60 for a new one) we gotta wait till Donna gets her tax return, then I'll fix it. Yeah, the plunging is what broke the seal I figure--I forgot about that.

But it's good to see the potato peels--as they were shredded, and not ground up--which means the blades were shot anyway. I can replace it, so in the mean time, I went to home depot and bought a endcap for the pipe to close the right sink off (so we can atleast use the other one without having issues. endcap was 80 cents! I hear you on the waiting to afford it part! We need a bigger dryer to do our quilts and blankets and things(had to buy a bigger bed when I got married... ) and we've been doing them one at a time til we get our tax refunds to buy that new dryer to match the washer we bought a year ago with tax return money!

Well, I guess having it leak wasn't so bad then- it DID let you see that the blades weren't working too well and you need a new one.
