AV software: Avast and AVG. (Both are great and free) They both found some viruses that Norton didn't.
Spyware software: Spybot - Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware SE Personal. They are too free and find lots of spam. |

I've been trialling all the different virus checkers out there - I'll warn you away from Norton, bloated software using its name and reputation to hide the fact their detection engine hasn't been improved for a couple of years.
Avast and NOD32 are both pretty good, but I found myself just re-installing AVG which gets my number one vote. I would also strongly recommend getting a decent firewall as well. ZoneAlarm seems popular on Ironworks, personally I don't care for it though and would recommend Kerio (both are free for personal use). Not only will they monitor your incoming/outgoing connections but Kerio (and presumably ZA too) will also keep an eye on suspicious activities inside your computer (eg. processes launching programmes that you didn't request etc) |

Spybot, Ad-Aware, AVG, ZoneAlarm, and HiJack This make up my basic set. All are free for personal use.

Ad-awareSE, Spybot, plus I like to use TrendMicros totally free online system scan. It is is excellent.
I did pay for ZoneAlarm Pro and I like its protective measures. Good stuff. I always found conflicts using Norton. |
