Hmm, my university is at 92nd place.
Well, at least it's on the Top 100 list.

My first university (for my bachelor's degree) isn't even on the list. But the place I got my master's degree, U of Michigan - Ann Arbor, is number 19. Interesting....

That list is bollocks. Southampton is number 1 for Electronics in the UK - everyone in England (working or studying in electronics areas) knows that and that's all that matters to me for example. Who cares if it isn't even in the top 100 overall? The point is, that list doesn't matter, you should check where the university is in your FIELD.

Southampton has a high rating in electronics due to increased funding and good facilities. But if it lacks in other areas such as theoretical research the cross link effect will drag it down. Sure you are good at that single area in a single department, but the world is more about inter-department co-opreration and influence. If you can't influence the outside world through journals in all areas, you are as good as you think you are.

#205 - Not too bad I guess.
The only problem I have with this ranking is the categories don't offer much to let students decide what is the best university for them. For example if I am going in to business, or law do I really care how many scientific articles have been published by a certain university, or that it has the best experts in the world when the student to professor ratio is poor. Just don't use this list alone to pick a university. For those choosing keep your options open, some of the smaller ones not listed may have more to offer you depending on what you are doing. Actually Vaskez is correct, while the list has merit for the characteristics it rated them on, these characteristics do not offer students any information on choosing a good university for them. These few ratings are not the be all and end all of what should be considered a good university. [ 09-09-2004, 12:06 PM: Message edited by: pritchke ] |
