My first time throught BG2 I remember being in the Umar Hills and there being a chicken farming family with about 15 chickens in their yard. Just for kicks, I decided to kill these chickens and to my surprise, one or maybe all (I can't remember now) of them left blue gems behind when they died. The wife tried to stop me, but the husband told her that I knew what I was doing and that she should let me continue. Is there a quest involved with this or did I just stumble on something else? I'm playing through again and I'm at that point and I'd like to do the quest for real. Let me know if anyone else had done this...

There is a quest. Talk to the man just before Macdulf, on the Imnesvale side of the river; be polite and he'll give you a quest. Talk to the farmer, and he'll tell you he stuffed a Beljuril stone his adventurer daughter died to obtain down the chicken's throat. I usually pay the farmer and he gives me the gem.

Yes there is a quest related to this. Talk to the peasent slightly to the north east of this and when he speaks reply "Just the price of being an adventurer my good man" then he will tell you about the chicken.

EDIT: whoops too slow

Or you can attack the chicken for a funny dialog.
