Actually I'm singing AND playing the guitar! First time I've played for an ad. I played bass tonight on a session I sang on. I've been playing instruments for years on records I've produced, but playing for a commercial session is altogether different. Kind of validates my musicianship further. Because I've always been a much stronger vocalist than instrumentalist, I've always had insecurities about my playing.

A few months ago I was present at a meeting when some songs I produced were being played for some industry people, who raved about the guitar parts (which I had played). I was kind of taken aback. Even now validation as an instrumentalist comes as a shock.

Anyhow, there's a little insight into my musicians mind. An eternal oscillation between extreme overconfident arrogance and disempowering insecurity.

Panasonic - with the men shaving to the song "Bend me shape me..."

Nikkon - Counter tenor (falsetto) ad libs, while a blonde baby girl plays up to the camera

Smirnoff - a radioheadesque vocal

Chevrolet - the tag "Buy you a Chevrolet"

M&Ms - 2 spots, the folk one and a Beatlesque version.

Claritin - don't know if they're still playing that. Pretty submerged ad lib vocal.

Last year there was an Orbit gum commercial in music theatre style, and the Kohls Christmas campaign where I sang a duet with a female; as well as an ad for California Power - where I did a John Lennon impersonation that Yoko Ono had to O.k.!!

All those are American ads. But I found out the other week theres a new Australian CGU ad that was made with an old vocal of mine.

edit: There was also a Coke ad earlier this year, but I have no recollection of the song.

If you play music videos it gets played every five songs or so... I'm almost getting sick of it!!
