The US have clearly stated that misinformation is part of their war tactic.
Otherwise I have a bit more trust in the truthfullness of their news. Yet their image is distorted. Not by what they choose to broadcast, but by what they do NOT chose to broadcast. The war in the former republic of Congo has for example attained a body count rivalling that of WW2 (including civilians) with little notice. Also the EU countries have kept devastating trade policies towards the third world firmly in place without any public outcry of any significance. Why? Because what's out of sight is out of mind.

The only news that comes out of Iraq has been edited by the either the Iraqi's or the Americans... So; no, I don't believe everything CNN, BBC World, (or any Dutch station for that matter) tells me.

I believe that these are reliable news services but bias affects all people at all times. A reporter sees an event a reports what they see from their viewpoint. This is not dishonesty but rather interpeting based upon our cultural/educational/life experiences. No report can show or understand every viewpoint, isolated reporters cannot tie in what they see to the overall picture.
Yesterdays headlines give a glimpse into the problem. Coalition forces were "ambushed" and "fierce fighting" took place. The push to Bagdad "has slowed due to fierce resistance." When you listen to the whole report or read the interview you find that 100-500 Iraqi troops were killed and no Coalition forces were killed. The headlines make you think that the Coalition is stopped or losing. Beating off an attack, inflicting caualties, and suffering no losses is usually considered a victory. |

There are always three sides to a story: his, hers, and the truth. I think it's important to get the news from a variety of sources to get as many of those three sides as possible.
Reminds me of an old joke: A reporter was walking along and saw a boy hitting a dog. He stopped and asked why, and the boy explained that the dog had attacked his dog, and he was defending his dog. The reporter whips out his notebook and starts writing a headline: YOUNG WOLVERINES FAN SAVES FAMILY PET The boy interrupts and says that he's not a Wolverines fan. The reporter starts over: YOUNG SPARTAN PROTECTS THE HELPLESS The boy interrupts again, and says that he's really a Buckeys fan. Reporter start over again: REDNECK BUCKEYE SCAMP ABUSES STRAY DOG It's all in perspective, and for those not familiar with it, Wolverines are U of Michigan fans, Spartans are Michigan State fans, and Buckeyes are Ohio State fans (and Wolverine wannabes). You can take this same joke and logic anywhere in the world, and it still works. Even on the Soccer/Football or cricket matches, it still works. Get as many viewpoints as possible, and look for the holes. What's left is the truth.

I have been watching this war daily on MSNBC. I have cought contradictions from one hour to the next. It seems to me that it's not necesarily purposefull, but just them jumping to the gun a bit when they get "breaking news". Then they find out the real numbers or stats or whatever, and deliver the correct news. Inde, has a good point also, "tactical news".

A good example of confusion would be the Iraqi base that the Americans took in Safwan. They requested a team to come in and check for chemical weapons and it got reported that they had found them.

I would trust Western reports, but only after a while. America runs off of wanting to make money, which gets us sensationalism in the news and eager reporters get things wrong. Nobody wants to be known for being wrong though and after about a day or so I'd assume it's safe to say that whatever they are saying is true.
