I was thinking about this the other day. We call them 'vanity plates'.
I usually think they are a big wank. One's like XRS.YST 2FR.EEK 2KU.L4U 2XC.ITE (alot seem to start with 2 around here...) But the best I've seen is a really old and beaten up brown car with the plate: TAX.SUX

I remember one in Germany that read B1T.CH3 and another reading toller on the front and hengst on the back
