![]() You know, an interesting thing I heard in a psych course was that in the northern hemisphere, more people commit suicide in winter, supposedly because of the coldness and so on, so dreary. But in the southern hemisphere the same time (ie Dec-Feb) has the most suicides, which is summer! So it's actually hard to know whether it's because of winter at all. Anyway, that was cheery ![]()

The shopping season might be partly to blame. Like Steve Fox says, so many people you want to get things for and a limited amount of money to spend on them equals feeling like you didn't get them what you feel they deserve.
Fortunately for me, my mom isn't very picky and my son has mostly asked for books and little toys (he's not a normal six year old). My dad and grandma are the hardest ones to shop for because they get themselves anything they need and the things they don't buy themselves are expensive. The best advice I can give for fighting depression, is spend as much time as you can in the sunlight and spend as much of the dark hours as you can with people who's company you enjoy or doing things that you enjoy most.

Feeling a little down huh? Happens to everyone once in a while man. And yes, English winters really do suck hard
But y'know, things really arn't as bad as they seem. Most of the time these sorts of crisis are entirely made up in the minds of the individual. All a matter of perspective blah blah blah. Heh heh, now it's alot easier for someone who isn't feeling down to do the whole pat-on-the-back 'cheer up charlie' routine to someone who is, but really it all boils down to how you yourself view your own world. Sometimes it's a biochemical thing, your body just feels....stale. Like you're kinda lost in a haze and it's really hard to get your brain to 'snap on' as it were. In which case I'd recommend taking St. John's Wort, it's a herbal remedy that you can buy over the counter at your local supermarket (and if your a scientific sceptic concerning the value of 'natural remedies' like I am, I can assure you it really does make a difference). If you're feeling down because of the cheap, tackiness of the holiday season and the pressure to conform to the pressures of the consumer society then all I can say to you is ■■■■ it man. Seriously. If you are serious about the spirit of the christmas holiday then spend time with your family, tell them you love them. Help out with cooking and preparation. Whip up your favourite dish for your kin. In terms of gifts just make a simple cardboard card telling the person how much they mean to you. That'll be more precious and unique than any gift at your local, smiley glad-hand department store. Christmas isn't even necessarily about christ (if you are a non-christian), the christians merely applied the name of their demigod and prophet to the holiday as a means of missionary-conversion. The holiday itself far outlives the cult of jesus. It's all about reserving a time of year when everyone can stop what they are doing and come together in peace. Seriously, just relax and be merry, and to hell with how many digits are in your bank account. And lastly, the cold and dark of winter does work to bring the spirits of most folk down. All I can recommend to you is to enjoy the comforts of hibernation ![]()
