I have been amazed and astounded.

My 17 month old son (Little Starbuck aka The Little Barnacle) had his blood drawn, for tests, about three months ago. For this particular visit to the Pediatrician, my wife was the only one accompanying our son. As the nurse approached him with the needle Little Starbuck laughed, acted bashful, and generally flirted with the nurse. However, once she stuck him, all merriment came to a grinding halt and the Little Barnacle, instead of crying peered over the nurse’s arm to see what she was doing (although he was wearing a cranky look on his face). To my wife’s amazement he didn’t shed one tear when he was stuck, the whole time blood was being drawn, or once the needle was removed. He only exhibited curiosity. After the needle was out he even attentively examined his new wound. Since he had been a good boy, the nurse informed him she would give him a Sesame Street bandage (as if the children who cry get plain bandages). She removed the backing from the Band Aid and put it over his wound. At this point the world came to a crashing halt and my son cried for all he was worth. It seems that a little needle is not a concern but it is a travesty to cover up his new found wound so that he cannot examine it any longer. Go figure. Remember at this point he was only 14 months old.

Two weeks ago he went in for another blood drawing. The scenario was identical, right down to crying over the bandage. Little Starbuck is a tough little guy. I have to admit I’m a proud papa. However, one of my greatest hopes for him is that he would have a compassionate heart.

Congradulations to you on your little boy's toughness. Just wondering why you chose "Starbuck" as a name? Starbucks pay you for it?

I never cried when I was getting a needle either. However, I *did* cry when the nurse wouldn't give me a Ninja Turtles band-aid. She was a cranky one...

It's a long story. But, in short, I have choose it as a nickname for him based on a Melville character out of Moby Dick. Starbuck was the first mate of Ahab's crew and my son is our first child.

I noticed your quote in your signature. Is that from the University of Wisconsin newspaper - The Onion?

It's from the online version of the newspaper. I go there every once in a while for a good laugh.
