Sounds like a heat issue.
make sure to clean the innards of any built up dust and clean all the fans, make sure they are all turning and getting enough air into the system. [ 11-04-2002, 04:24 PM: Message edited by: MagiK ] |

The new Graphics card may have agrevated it more, as magiK said it is probably related to heat, try putting a new fan in or take the side of the case and blow one of the big fans in if it still crashes my dad had a problem like that he found out that the memory in the slot was slipping out of place causing the computer to crash,or your system might have a conflict.if non of the above help then go to the microsoft website (or search on google)and type in the error you will probably find the source of the problem.look on the bright side you have an error to search for witch is more than my dad had.
Hope you work your problems out |

Heat. Almost certainly its heat.
Simple test - run the computer with the case off. (As a side note, dont drink coke/beer/anything near it in this condition. Gets expensive). If it is heat the crashes will stop or at worst be significantly reduced. New fans & heatsinks should take care of it. A coating of arctic silver (or other good thermal paste) between the sink and the CPU/GPU will help. The other problem with heat is expansion. This leads to creep - components expand, contract, and move in their sockets. Possibly a component is breaking contact when hot. The fact the computer takes hours to come back supports this theory. Reseat everything, just to make sure.

If none of the tips mentioned above solve the problem you'll have to do it manually.
Remove all the cards occupying the PCI slots. Restart and look at Device Manager to ensure that all expansion cards are no longer in the hardware list. If you have a spare video card that you know is good switch these as well. Run the machine for a few hours to see if it crashes with NOTHING but the video card installed. After making sure that the video card isnt the problem insert your sound card, install it, ect., and then run the machine for a few hours again to make sure its not the sound card...... Repeat this process for every expansion card. If there are any cards such as a TV Tuner Card that are seldom or never used, remove them permanently. It only takes a couple of minutes to install them in the future if it proves necessary. If cleaning, additional cooling, and testing the devices dont help I would recommend, a 400 watt power supply, new RAM, new CPU, or new Motherboard, or new Hard Disk Drive. How old is the unit or the parts thereof?

After all of that, it was just (yeah, 'just', a faulty motherboard. It's been replaced and everything is fine.
I know I'm dredging this up from a couple of pages back, but I thought it would be kinda rude to just ignore everyone who tried to help, and I just wanted to say "thanks" and let you know I (well, actually 'we' ![]()

Make sure you inspect fans and power supply for dustbunny buildup. If any air passages are blocked by dust, clear them out with a vacuum or a handheld whisk broom (mind the static electricity!). Also make sure their isn't a heavy dust buildup on the components of the circuit boards - this can inhibit heat transfer.
Do you have any pets? It can take a surprisingly small amount of time to clog up fans and grills with hairballs.
