My parents are quite politically active and forwarded this to me.
If you are as sick and tired of UNSOLICITED emails for porn sites, check this out and consider 'signing' the petition. It's making progress with approximately 135,000 'signatures', but they want to reach 250,000 'signatures'. P.S. - And just so I don't offend anyone, I have no problem with anyone going and looking for porn on the internet if that's their thing, I'm just sick and tired of having mails sent to me that I DON'T want and didn't ask to be sent. And I also think the child pornography issue is an important one and that is this groups main goal to eradicate. *************************** Click here to sign this petition to protect your families and your children. http://www.grassfire.net/16/petition...ID=2233006&P=1 Grassfire.net has launched a NATIONAL CAMPAIGN designed to rally 100,000 citizens to stand united against Internet Porn in the next 90 days. After the U.S. Supreme Court recently struck down The Child Pornography Protection Act, it became clear to us that our government lacks the courage to fight Internet porn. Our NATIONAL CAMPAIGN demands the U.S. government moves decisively--enacting tough laws that truly protect our families from Internet smut. * * * OUR FOUR GOALS. --GOAL #1-- OUTLAW all unsolicited pornographic e-mail (PORN-SPAM). --GOAL #2-- BAN computer-generated child pornography. --GOAL #3-- KEEP OUR TAX DOLLARS from supporting the porn industry by banning the use of public computers to view pornography, and requiring all public places (schools, libraries) to install pornography filtering software. --GOAL #4-- Require all adult-oriented websites to migrate to a ".adult" domain and establish the kid-friendly ".kids" section on the Internet. We can stop the flood in Internet Pornography - but only if a vast army of concerned citizens rises up and says "enough is enough!" ***************************** If anyone wants the original mail, PM or email me and I'll forward the entire mail directly to you. There's much more to this mail, but I didn't want to put it all in here and there are many more links, some really good for parents who need to know what's going on out there while their child is online. Also, here's a bit of the 'update' they just sent me today. (I originally signed the petition a couple of weeks ago, I think)
************************ 6/18/02 YOUR PETITIONS HIT THE MARK! Last Thursday morning, the Grassfire team traveled to Washington D.C. to deliver your petitions to The U.S. Justice Department, and to Rep. Lamar Smith's office. The results of these deliveries were nothing short of phenomenal. Click below to see a photo of the event! Click here As we discovered, we chose the perfect time to deliver your petitions. Let me explain. Upon arrival, Rep. Lamar Smith's office was scrambling to get his Child Obscenity and Porn Prevention Act of 2002 (H.R. 4623), into full committee mark-up--essentially the final step before going to the Senate for vote. The fact that we were delivering 135,000 petitions in support of this bill sent a very clear message that the American people want strong and immediate action on this issue! Our next delivery took place at Attorney General John Ashcroft's office at the U.S. Justice Department-urging them to appeal the decision to overrule CIPA. Even though security wouldn't allow us to take photographs of the delivery, associate director, Chris Huff, spent an hour carefully explaining how the attorney general is fighting online obscenity. In fact, several times, Mr. Huff said, "Tell your people these petitions are the best way to get heard in Washington... They are making a difference!" WHAT AN ENCOURAGEMENT TO PRESS ON! * * * ACTION ITEM We are convinced Washington is ready to listen and act on what American's are telling them about the parade of online smut. NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT!!! Help us rally 250,000 people to stand with us against illegal Internet porn ... ************************* Again, I can forward the entire mail to anyone interested. But, I have noticed lot's of Chinese spam email, and It's getting REALLY bad. I have no idea how they think I can read it! Annoying stuff. |

well I would sign the petition if it just covered item number 1. I have a problem with some of the other parts as did the Sup Ct. Let us not forget what happen in Cinci 10 or so years ago concernign porn.
Oh I am agaisnt the child stuff for sure. the problem that arrises is that it would cover a filme like Lolitta ( i think that is spelled right) or what was that Brooke Shields film that made her famous? That would have been covered under these porn bans too.

I am with Lanthir on this one. Items 2 and on starts to smack too much of the thought police. "Don't think this or we will put you in prison." If the petition dealt only with the Spam issue Id be fine but there is just too much religious-political stuff going on in it for me to support it. So I guess in short I say Yes to 1 and 3 but the other two are just too wide open to vague interpretation by some of the more.... errr "Enthusiastic" peoples of faith who want to tell us all what is good for us.
Im not advocating child porn (heck I have two kids of my own to worry about) I just don't want to see the kind of government intrusion into our privacy that this would open up. [ 06-19-2002, 09:19 AM: Message edited by: MagiK ] |

Lanthir, that would be Pretty Baby, and Brooke was 12 at the time. Yes, that would be covered. Also The Guitar Lesson, and other famous paintings.
EDIT to correct HTML, darn stuff. [ 06-19-2002, 09:19 AM: Message edited by: Attalus ] |

I don't remember Pretty Baby. Was that the one where her father was flipping out over the boy she was dating and had him put in jail? I never saw it, just remember the trailers. I have no problems with any of the 4 points of the petition. Send the petition to me DragonMage and I will sign it.

There is a lot of debate over what is pornography and what is art. I live in Canada, and new laws were introduced to protect children (a good thing) but they go too far (a bad thing). To me, child pornography is anything that shows kids in a sexual light. But under the laws as writen, if I have a nude picture of my child on the way to the bathtub (or even in it, really) that is now considered child pornography. The cliche "bear-skin rug" photos are now technically pornography. That's a bit much. I agree, obviously, with preventing child pornography, but a simple nude pic, or painting, should not be categorized as such.
