For anyone following the trial of the Australian accused of smuggling drugs into Indonesia, she was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.

And a story can be found here. Well, I must say I don't envy her. Time in an Indonesian jail doesn't exactly sound like fun.

Was there any evidence supporting her denial? Or is all the opposition just an emotional reaction?

She should just be allowed to do her time inher country. This should be ok with both side. The indonesian get to fix the time, and the australians and her will know she won't be in a foreign prison in a foreign country.

She could well be guilty though. Lets not automatically assume because its an 'eastern / Asian' country that the whole court system is inept. I have my doubts however of her guilt after all I work at Sydney airport and know some of the stuff that goes on there.

My problem is the length of the sentence, 20 years for wacky baccy!!! How many years did some of those found guilty of involvement of terrorism and the Bali bombing or the Hilton bombing murders in Indonesia get?

Edit for spelling

If I was sentenced to prison in a country with a physolophy, language and political system different than mine, I'd happily add 5 years to my time if it meant I could spend it at home...

Their is also the rumor that her brother put the weed into her bag since he is a conviced drug user here in Australia.

The judges dismissed all the evidence that the defence brought forward.

Both sides are apparently going to appeal. The prosocution wants her in prison for life. The defence want her aquitted.

I do feel sorry for the girl being in the same prision as the Bail Bomber. Apparently a few days ago when she was outside getting some exercise he was throwing insults at her and threating her with all sorts of stuff.

I watched the "live verdict" and it was reality TV at its ugliest - you could see this girl gradually break down as the 2 1/2 hour verdict was read out - particularly the last 30mins which I watched while I was at the gym, it was very unpleasant, yet compelling, viewing. And when the actual verdict was read out - 20 years - the pandemonium in the courtroom.

I don't know if she's guilty or not, but she was obviously going through hell. That telecast would make a fine deterrent for ANY idiot who decides to smuggle drugs into a Sth East Asian country - you'd have to be crazy to do it.

I'm dubious that someone could have 9 pounds of pot and not know it. Not just because of the weight, but also because space-wise it would've taken up fully half a large suitcase, at best. Even if crushed and pressed. That's simply a frikkin lot of pot. In the U.S. it would land you a doozie of a sentence too, most likely. Half a pound is a felony here, with a minimum 1 year sentence. We're talking 18 times that amount.

Anyway, you all know I'm against making it illegal to begin with.

Bottom line is that Corby couldn't prove to the Indo judges who actually owned the pot - so they basically followed the below set of assumptions:

Corby admitted to owning the boogie board
The pot was in the boogie board case
Corby denied owning the pot but couldn't advise who owned it
Therefore Corby must have owned it

And that was basically it.

It always worries me when that's the case if I watch something similar. Humans can be so goulish sometimes!
