Should the Canadian Airborne be brought back?

Yes.

I suppose.

I did not know there used to be one.

It would be cool to have.

So, uh...yes!

BTW>>>Why were they disbanded, taking into account that since you said "brought back" that implies that there was a reason that they were taken away.

No enemies to need air support?

They were disbanded due to
A) Liberal budgetary cuts.
B) A VERY nasty crisis after a teen was tortured to death in a Somalia mission.
C) "Prevalence" of racist attitudes/ biker gang problem.
D) Vidoes showing horrific initiation rites were given to the media.

Then probably not, unless there's a good reason for them to exist. Is there one that I'm unaware of?

An elite, mobile unit capable of deploying quickly always has a reason to remain in existence. That however, is my opinion, many disagree, saying there is no need.

I wouldn't mind seeing them brought back. However, it is unlikely in the current political climate. The Canadian military is, IMO, long overdue for restoration of some of its pre-Chretien era funding AND a decent overhaul. More money alone won't fix things, and it doesn't seem to be forthcoming anyways. There's too many desk officers and not enough troops.

An elite mobile unit that can be quickly deployed is a good thing - we need that. Calling it the Canadian Airborne again isn't a good idea because of the (warranted) negative images surrounding that name.

Depends on whether Canada ever wants to be involved with any kind of Military action anywhere. From the way I read things...(and I may be worng because I don't have enough canadian sources) Canada might as well just disband it's military all toghether. I mean seriously, why do they need one? They know the US won't let an agressor nation "invade" Canada....so what do they need a military for? (Im being serious here, not just flip)

What about JTF2? We sort of already have an elite mobile unit that snipes off terrorist from miles away and can be deployed fairly quickly. So I would say no!!! It is better to concentrate on funding and improving what we have and concentrating on what we are good at. We don't have the manpower for invading other countries so it is best to concentrate on small elite forces that can specilize in certain task. It could be counter-terrorism, survalliance, clearing mine fields, or making drinking water out of crap. We do need a navy, and air transportation for the few troops we do deploy, maybe trim the airforce to a few elite fighters and transport units.

The JTF is not nearly large enough to be deployed in a serious crisis zone, and is not likely to be able to do anything on a large scale, ie a peacekeeping mission ( such as Yugoslavia in the early 1990's) or a warstopping mission, both of which the CF is regularly called to do.
