The US-European Cassini-Huygens space probe has successfully passed through Saturn's rings and fired up its engine as it approached the planet's orbit, the US space agency has announced.....

Whew!

Man, honestly, this is awesome news. I think it's great that the product of the agonising amount of time, effort and money that has gone into this project was able to actually survive the trip there I can't wait to see some up-close-and-personal Saturn photos...

Thanks for the link Lauren

I am seriously waiting for the pictures to come back, it iwll be the first time we have actually seen the rings from close enough to see individual pieces...they should be spectacular.

dont uncross your fingers yet. i wouldnt put it past space equipment to have an antena jam and communications lock up right now, taking a year to come back online.

when under 20 percent of space missions like this are a success, you learn not to get your hopes up. the ones that fail just fade into obscurity, and we try again.

Actually it was the Better Faster Cheaper program that suffered those kinds of failures. This is not one of those. Cassini is a big budget major production, hopefully it will be as successful as it's forbearers.

Edit: ok, I had to add this...I couldn't hold it in any longer...."Just be glad it passed through the rings and not Uranus"

only if you'll forgive me for adding this: "if it was near Uranus it wouldnt have passed through, it would have stopped for a probe.

Yes, I think it's going to be very exciting to finally see the rings, and hopefully see the surface of Saturn

I hope the probe is destroyed by sentient clouds of gas who plan on taking over the Earth.
