Pilot fined $18,870 for obscene gesture

16.01.2004

An American Airlines pilot was arrested at Sao Paulo International Airport after making an obscene gesture while being photographed by Brazilian immigration officers.

The pilot, Dale Robin Hirsch, raised his middle finger at police while undergoing the security measures that require United States citizens to be fingerprinted and photographed upon entering Brazil.

Relations between the two countries have been soured by Brazil's decision to implement its security measures from January 1, apparently in retaliation for a similar US programme to fingerprint and photograph visitors.

Local media said the 52-year-old pilot was fined 36,000 reais ($18,870) and released, but his passport was confiscated until the fine was paid.

American Airlines reportedly agreed to pay the fine.

Wow, Brazil really is pissed at the US. Fairly ridiculous unless, of course, this kind of fines are standard in Brazil.
