As for Mugabe's decision to pull out of the Commonwealth, many observers called it the diplomatic equivalent of "you can't fire me, I quit." I think the Commonwealth countries did the correct thing in continuing the suspension until Zimbabwe cleans up its act. [ 12-08-2003, 02:05 PM: Message edited by: pritchke ] |

Yes I agree, Pritchke. There's no point in suspending them for their actions then lifting the suspension when nothing has changed. It's a shame that CHOGM degenerated into the Mugabe show though.

Just how long has Mugabe been in power? 22 years?! He indeed seems like a dictator.

I question whether there is really much of a significant relevance to the Commonwealth nowadays, but there would be even less significance if the latest CHOGM had lifted the suspension when nothing had changed in Zimbabwe. They stood firm, and Mugabe took his bat and ball and went home. Bully tactics may work for him in local politics, and they can't be allowed to work in his favour globally.

since bush believes so strongly in ousting dictators who commit atrocities against their own people, i expect the little oil monkee to declare war on mugabe any day now.
