For better or worse, Arnold Schwartzenager will run for California Governor.

After seeing Kindergarten Cop this weekend, I am unsure if I support his policies towards education.

My reservation is that he's toeing the Republican party line with anti-Gray speech, but not addressing the real issue of the referendum in California. I am no Gray supporter, but CA's system hamstrings the legislature. After referendums requiring certain percentages of all state monies each year go to education (40% IIRC) and other such referendum measures, the legislature in CA has its hands tied in dealing with the budget problem. I read that only 10% of spending in CA is discretionary -- meaning only 10% could possibly be used to go toward fixing the budget in any given year, assuming ALL discretionary spending went to ONLY fix the budget. Given the 20+% economic downturn in CA in recent years, NO ONE would really be able to fix it.

CA's system is an example of democracy run amok. It is exactly why we normally have representative republics rather than pure democracies. Any CA governor must deal with re-working the referendum system, or CA will never see the light at the end of the tunnel.

FYI -- if anyone knows recent Gray history, the situation is deplorable. In the most recent election, Gray broke the political "gentleman's code" and spent million launching a muck campaign on TV against the strongest Republican opponent in the Republican PRIMARY. Once the best opponent was defeated in the primary, he had secured victory. Shortly after being elected, he reported the $48 billion deficet. Hmmm.... totally deplorable, even for a politician.

Note: nearly all info in this post comes from the most recent Time Magazine article regarding Gray Davis.

Whoa, T.L. I didn't expect anyone to get serious on this thread considering the foot it got off on.

I gotta agree with ya that Gray Davis seems to be as slick a career politician as they come, but this recall election has all the earmarks of a 300 ring circus. The next governor of California could with a minute percentage of the vote if enough people jump on th ballot and split all the votes.

The whole situation is kinda surreal. What if Larry Flynt wins? Legal prostitution and drugs? What about Arrianna Huffington? A SUV ban?
And all the conservatives on the boob tube are celebratiing Arnold running when he seems about as Liberal as they can get for a Repub. Zoiks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
