It seems that they are now proposing that travellers will be required to obtain a 'tranit-visa' if they stop in the US on the way to another country:

"For example, foreign travelers might catch a flight in New Zealand that stops in Los Angeles and continues on to London. Those travelers do not need a U.S. visa because they are placed in a secure area of the Los Angeles airport, staffed by airline and U.S. customs and immigration agents to ensure that they do not leave the airport illegally.

The Department of Homeland Security said yesterday that it is considering eliminating the "transit without visa" program in light of the new intelligence."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2003Jul30.html

These measures would affect around 360,000 travellers every year. Now I don't know about anyone else, but I already consider long haul flights to be both expensive and a pain as it is. If I had to obtain an extra visa in the process, I'd be looking for an alternative route - and this would almost certainly involve a non-US airline...

I agree. I think the gov't needs to re-evaluate the security measures for airline safety, figure out a way to make it efficient, logical, and yet still create safety and security. For example, at our airport, you can't drive to what had been passenger drop off anymore (blocked off). BUT, you can still drive to passenger pick up, which is just below the passenger drop off. What's the logic in that???? Someone with a bomb could do just as much if not more damage there!!!
The security set up is a mess. You have to walk here to get your ticket, there to get the security to go through your check in baggage, yet another place for them to go through your carry on and metal detector. Just makes no sense.
Why not either do the carry on and check in at the same time, or, not make you have to go to a check in check, instead have those guards in the back, going through the luggage as the airline personnel send it back.
What used to take 10 minutes now takes 45 at least (that's when it's slow there). I'm all for making flying more secure and safe, but there has to be a better way. I'm not at all saying to get rid of any of these checks, just organize them in a more efficient way.

No kidding, guys. It is a mess. It's also inefficient as hell. For one thing -- the new dumbass rule that no cars can park within XX (I think it's 300) feet of an airport. Many airports have now lost upwards of 200 parking spaces because of this. And, I argue that this measure adds little to no security -- especially since no terrorist group has ever used a bomb that would do damage at that range.

If you want to make something inefficient, hand it over to a government agency.

On the transit visas, how much will we scream when other nations follow suit, making it much more difficult on American travellers -- on their way to rebuild Iraq. I'd love to see Bremmer stuck in France trying to get a transit visa for 3 days.

Wish me and my wife luck -- she's travelling via air today.

In the days when America thought terrorism was something awfull you watched happening overseas on your tv news (just a few years ago.) The IRA used a morter out of the back of a van to bomb Heathrow airport in London.

I can only speak about security down here in Australia, but after some pathetic security attempts during the Olympics in Sydney and for a year after the 11th sept tragedy. Security is now getting very professional. And I can assure you all, A lot is been done behind the scenes which would be unwise for me to talk about. You are all a lot safer than you perhaps realise and as new ideas and products are being brought online very quickly, you can all rest assured

*BTW I work for an Airline*

However there are bound to be some very blunt security methods employed for quite a while but after some hit and miss I am sure things will settle down. One of the saddest things personally is the flights in the cockpit have more or less stopped. I have fond memories of being in the cockpit for a flight between Sydney and Darwin talking shop with the pilots not so long ago. I only get to drive them on the ground at work, to be involved in actually flying one is Pilots are very quick thinkers

My parental unit is an American Airlines flight attendant...has been for 36 years. She flew from Boston for many years and knew many of the crew that were murdered on 9/11.

36 years with a company and her pension is unsure, though the corporate guys have platinum parachutes. They even voted themselves...what do they call it..."staying bonuses"? Where they get a bunch of money for not moving to another company. AS IF ANYBODY WANTS TO HIRE A BUNCH OF IDIOTS WHO SCREWED UP AN AIRLINE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Sorry...I'm straying far from the point, but it the airline industry hits a nerve, you know? My father was a pilot, too. My whole kindergarten class took a trip out to see a 767 and I was almost the coolest kid there...except some punk had a herpetologist for a dad and he brought in a bunch of snakes.

Lousy herpetologist.

You want tight security, look to Jerusalem and El Al. They've got the tightest airline security in the world. Background checks start when you buy the ticket. However, some of their measures might violate constitutional rights here...

No problem! Just make all international flights land in GM bay for 'security checks' and you can do whatever you want without 'offending' the constitution...
