Polish artist convicted of blasphemy

A Polish artist has been found guilty of blasphemy by a court, writes the newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza. To the newspaper's knowledge, it has never happened before that an artist was convicted of violating religious emotions. What Danuta Nieznalska had done, and which upset the court in Gdansk, was to have depicted a male limb nailed to a cross. In addition to a fine she was sentenced to six months of travel prohibition. The artist is upset and says that the judge has admitted to not understanding art.

Sorry this doesn't say much - I tried to find more information about this online, but my search didn't come up with anything. Can anybody else find something more? Or translate it from a Polish newspaper (if it's there)?

Oh, and, I wonder if the EU is going to make a comment on this.

Er... depends on what limb it is. *shudder*
Religious paintings often portray Christ on the cross, so it would be slightly surprising if they took offense at a simple portrayal of a nailed limb. Of course if it was very realistic or graphic, I could understand why it would upset Christians, but not to the point where the artist would be actually convicted. So possibly it was worse than that. Still not enough to warrant anything like a conviction of course but understandable offensive to people.

A male limb...like an arm or a leg? Or a more, um, *private* limb.

Well, sucks for the artist, that's for sure. I hope she sells lots of paintings to help pay the fine.

Yes, that's what I was wondering about too, Chewie. Spelca, does the original Swedish make it any clearer? It can be just an unintentially ambiguous translation on Spelca's part of course, but it did er pop into my mind. And if that's true, I can see why people got upset.

Well, it said "a male limb" in the original, but I think that in Swedish that only means, emm, *that* limb.

I don't know about blasphemy, but I would definitely "nail" her for obscenity.
