... under the Clean Water Act.

St. Louis -- Tyson pled guilty to 20 felony violations of the Clean Water Act, and admitted it repeatedly discharges untreated waste water from a poultry processing plant near Sedalia, Mo., into the Lamine River between 1996 and 2001. Todd Graves, US Attorney, states "Tysone was repeatedly warned, but failed to correect the violations."

Sounds like a slap on the wrist to me. They Tyson execs should also be forced to use the tainted water in their homes for the next 5 years.

During that period Tyson was a big contributor to William Jefferson Bligh Clinton.

I don't know it is in the U.S., but in France, some companies keep acting that way because they have already cynically calculated that possible fines cost them less than the profits they make from their lawless practices.

Most US companies so this as well. Till they start putting CEO's in prison for these sorts of violations you will continue to see this sort of cost/benefit decisions.

*yawn* are you trying to make a point? Big business always gives buckets full of money to the party in power. We could also talk about how Enron was a huge contributor to the Shrub and how this allowed Enron to get away with robbing several western states of billions of dollars. Of course in the case of Enron the ties are much deeper then a few checks.

The biggest gouger was a Government power company. Namely the Los Angeles Metropolitan Power co.

But they only took advantage of the situation Enron and the other out of state power and natural gas traders created.

Question Mark

Moiraine, companies in the US do this, also. In fact, they plan for it, because many companies hold sums of money in reserve to use in case they are caught and fined for regulatory violations. To them, violations are simply a risk of conducting business.
I agree with Rokenn--if you wish to stop this sort of behavior, begin putting CEOs and board members in prison. Either that, or remove any sort of cap on fines that may be assessed. I think Tyson shareholders would want questions answered and heads to roll had the fines been $7.5 billion instead of million.
