My dream job: Being the protectorate of a 50 or 100 acre piece of forest and being in charge of shooting any living human who dares set foot on it. Oh well. One can dream. Check out what President Shrub is up to now (I liked the roadless rule, of course):

Forest Service Temporary Rule Exempts
Alaska's Tongass Forest From Roadless Rule

The Bush administration published a temporary roadless rule exemption July 15 for Alaska's 16.8 million-acre Tongass National Forest (68 Fed. Reg. 41, 865).
As part of a June 2003 lawsuit settlement with the state of Alaska, the U.S. Forest Service agreed to grant Tongass a temporary exemption from the roadless rule, which designated 58.5 million acres of federal lands off-limits to roadbuilding (Alaska v. USDA, D. Alaska, No. A01-039 CV, settlement filed 6/10/03).

The temporary rule allows timber sales to go forward as the agency develops a permanent rule for the area, which extends approximately 500 miles along the state's southeastern coast. It would allow logging on 300,000 acres, or 4 percent, of the 9.6 million acres of inventoried roadless lands in Tongass.

In a separate advance notice of proposed rulemaking published July 15, the Forest Service sought comment on whether the exemption should be made permanent and also apply to the 5.6 million-acre Chugach National Forest, located in south central Alaska (68 Fed. Reg. 41, 863).

The Alaska changes were announced June 9 in conjunction with a proposal allowing governors to seek exemptions from the roadless rule. The exemptions proposal is expected to be published in the Federal Register in the fall (112 DEN A-2, 06/11/03 ).

Written comments on the advance notice should be sent by Aug. 14 to Roadless ANPR, USFS Content Analysis Team, P.O. Box 22777, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84122; by electronic mail to roadlessanpr@fs.fed.us; or by fax to (801) 880-3311.

Comments on the proposed rule should also be sent by Aug. 14 to Roadless TNF, Content Analysis Team, P.O. Box 22810, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84122; by electronic mail to roadlesstnf@fs.fed.us; or by fax to (801) 880-2808.

More information on the rules is available by contacting Dave Barone, planning specialist with the Forest Service ecosystem management coordination staff, at (202) 205-1019. In Juneau, Alaska, contact Jan Lerum, Forest Service regional planner, at (907) 586-8796.

I think it is a great idea TL. We can get rid of all those pesky trees and cover the ground with concrete to prevent erosion. Preventing erosion is ecologically sound, don't you know. I'm tired of all these people wanting to preserve the enviroment. After all I'll never see any of the effects. I mean, all those timber companies deserve to make obscene profits off of an area which they don't own nor invested in. Sure only a few people will get the money. And sure, the price of lumber and wood products won't become any cheaper, but at least the people who donated to Bush's campaign will benefit from their investment. Now isn't this what capatalism is all about?

"Pave the Planet"? I thought that was the name of an Edgar Winter song. If i remember it correctly it went it went: "pave the Planet! Who will pave the planet? Who will volunteer? .....Don't you know we'll pave the planet, judgement time is here!"
