Are you quite sure that you're not under the influences of any spell/effect? If not, you might want to download this file and install it over the original NPCSound.bif file in your Shadows of Amn/data directory, because the file could be damaged.

But first press the *R* key and in the character screen check all characters if they are mind-controlled in one way or the other.
The same happened to me once and in my case there was a mind-controlled character in my group. He was controlled by an enemy killed quite a while ago by me and trotted along with the group. But I was not able to give her any instructions. After a decent Dispel Magic everything was ok again.

I think there´s a bug in the game when the controller of a mind-controlled character gets killed under certain circumstances.

Spoiler

I have had this exact problem in the past. When Jaheira left my party and went to the harpers, I chased her (as you are supposed to do). When I found her, it would not allow me to talk to her. It said mind-controlled characters cannot initiate dialogue. As it turns out, I reloaded to a previous save game, she left, I followed and then she spoke to me.

It seems to be a bug in the game. I hope this helps.

Aviendha.

did your person get dominated, etc? if you used charm or something to regain control of him/her (or worse, Illithid control circlets, b/c they have thousands of hours duration) then it might mess up. download the official BG2:SoA patch and it should be fixed. Baldurdash also has several patches dealing with this.
