I have been looking at a few things on Gamespy's 'Forumplanet' and I saw one of their Ad's FOR the forum saying "Stay for the FLAMES".

Now.. Erm, I don't know about you, but that is a really lousy marketing gimmick. It's like "Hey, all you'll see on the forums is Flame wars, those are 'cool'".

It just made me stop and shake my head.. yeah, we come to those forums for the Flames. Just hit me as a totally stupid Ad.

In my eyes, I got this impression:
"Need help with (Insert any game)? Well, sift through all the trolls and flamewars, you MIGHT find a few good threads".

If you have seen this, what was your take on this?

Personally, I *have* seen TONS of flamewars on some of the forumplanet sites, some of them try to keep it clean, but what kind of message does an ad like this send?

I just wanted to say to everyone here--You are awesome, and we would NEVER encourage such behavior--even if it meant we would get more 'traffic' to the site. I'd rather be small and clean than big and dirty! (Oi! Cool saying)

Anyway, what is your take?

It's pretty sad to advertise that way. I think everyone loves a good debating stoush and we've had our share of those, but there's a big difference between passionately arguing and flaming - the former implies that there is respect between debaters, the latter implies none.

BGDungeon was like that in its latter days - full of flaming for the sake of flaming. Nobody enjoys that (except trolls).

I get the feeling that if I would have seen that ad I would have come straight back here to IW and enjoyed the happiness ... and add that saying to your sig..

Stay for the flames ?? Hmm... lessee what flames do shall we...
Flames = heat
heat = hot (duh )
If a message board is hot enough, which advertising like this will make sure of, you end up the perfect conditions for troll breeding. Now who on earth would want to be in a place which encourages trolls to become, to grow, and to even EXIST ??

I totally Agree! I mean.. it gets old, when all you see anymore is just crap.. and all that is left are trolls.

Thank God I have you Guys (Mods AND awesome Members) It's nearly perfect (Except for the occasional Wedin/Isatron (i.e. Assmouth)

Just think, over the years (Since BigBagger) we REALLY haven't had that many trolls. a few of the more 'annoying' have been 'repeat offenders'. So Either they know to stay AWAY, knowing we bust their asses in MINUTES or they leave their troll alter-ego at forumplanet?

I would be proud knowing Ironworks Forums had a good reputation, where any good-faithed user can coexist, and relax and enjoy--without having to put up your 'guard' everytime you post. I think we've achieved this (a long time ago too), and it's awesome!

Z, click here to see how much people appreciated the fact that we have a ZERO TOLERANCE policy to trolls here (Wedin/Istaron's shortlived comeback).

Just for people's benefit, Istaron attempted a (shortlived) comeback. One thing to take out of Istaron's coming back - he may have THOUGHT he got away with it earlier on, but it goes to show that what goes around, comes around. Guess who had the last laugh, eh.
Posting what he did about Lioness was bad enough... but to come back?!?!? That guy REALY gets on my nerves... Zero Tollerance is indeed a good thing. I kinda hope he does pop up again, just to see what Z has in store for him...

Yup, I still remember Istaron's comments. I didn't come back onto this site a lot after that. But hey, I was here when Wedin got banned. Thanx again, Mem.
