I just upgraded the 'puter and got an Nvidia Geforce 3 video card, but it seems like the only drivers that BGII recognizes are openGL Drivers. When I choose "3d effects" in the config page, the card doesn't work--I don't get the usual concentric squares. Any ideas?

i have the same card (or extremely similar), and experienced similar problems. However, on my card software, you can select an option to have it always on. That way, you don't get a doubling of effects that makes the screen look funny. If your card can do that, set it up and forget about what BGII says.
by the way, i'm pretty sure the GeForce family IS an OpenGL family.
