Well, most of you are probably fixed to their television set watching what happened in NY this morning. Another airplane crashed in NY (Yorick, I'm not sure if it hit close to where you live but I hope you're OK... and all others that live in NY who post on this forum).
Now, let's get into speculation. The first and obivious theory for the flight is of course a bird strike causing catastrophic failure(as a pilot, that's my opinion). However, we cannot rule out possible sabotage or bomb being planted on the aircraft's engine and detonated at takeoff. Or even just plain structural failure as the structural standards for plane in the US are well below those of other civilized country. Though I really doubt that this crash is a terrorist attack, I'm curious to see what's going to come out of it. First, the NTSB, the FBI and the Governement will tell us that the plane went down in a non-criminal way (wether it's the case or not). But, I wouldn't be surprised if Bin tried to take credit for it (or even elude to terrorism) even if he had nothing to do with it. Of course, he'd do this only to reinforce the views that the system is flawed and non-secure (that's what I would do if I was in his place!). What do you think? Terrorism or just a plain normal plane crash? [ 11-12-2001: Message edited by: Ryanamur ]

As far as anyone knows at this point, the engine exploded...it could be the result of a faulty engine or some terrorist action.
I'll put my bet on a faulty engine at this point but the truth can only be discerned through closer studies of the wreckage. P.S. No worries with Yorick, he is back in Australia. |

quote: Warning! I am not trying to piss off anyone here! I think it will be equally bad for the Airline Industry if this was NOT terrorism. Mainly because these airplanes should be checked over more closely now and if it was poor maintenance, how can we trust the airlines now if they can't keep the jets working right? There is speculation that a flock of birds being sucked into an engine may be the cause. Don't pilots check their flight paths? If this was just an accident, I wonder what effect this will have on travelers, especially so close to Thanksgiving. I wonder if this is the end of air travel as we know it? That would be a little ridiculous, but I wonder? |

Well as close to the shoreline as it was when the accident occured, it could have been as simple as a lone pelican if a bird or birds were involved. Kind of hard to coordinate flight paths with a flock of seaguls (unless the band flies LOL) but seriously, pilots can't do much of anything about birds not knowing they are putting themselves and people in danger if their paths are about to cross.
This will no doubt have a detrimental impact on the industry. American Airlines does not have the best track record for maintenance! Perhaps this is the catapult to get the government involved in making sure that the industry restores and maintains safety procedures. That would be a good resolution towards getting people to fly again and of restoring the business to it financial security, yes? |

As from someone who works for the government (Air Force...not a pilot...just guard the planes and bases), I believe that it was an accident. If it was a bomb (or anything else to sabotage the plane) that was planted on the aircraft then why wasn't it found during a search (if they are searched or even guarded). I don't think it will hurt the airline industry to much, but for AA it could affect them. It is sad to see something like this happen so soon after (or anytime) after 11 Sept.

I hope this isn't terrorists related for obvious reasons.
If it isn't, it will obviously cause more injury to the airline industry, but it doesn't necessarily mean someone screwed up. Planes will continue to go down from time to time no matter how well maintained, thoroughly inspected, etc. We should continue to pursue every avenue of safety, but realize machines, as humans, are prone to error. It's totally freakish to wake up on the morning you're about to leave on an eigth hour international flight, to find out plane has crashed in the city of ultimate destination.
I'm in Singapore now. I will be for the next week or two and then back to NYC via Sydney. I kept reiterating "the safest time to fly - statistically - is just after a crash." Isn't it? I was horrified for those in New York. What a nightmare. Such an extension and amplification of the grief from 9/11. ![]() |
