Got Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Played for an hour. Didn't have time for more. Or was it the nerves I lacked... Well, playing this sort of game at 3AM while there's a rainstorm outside is not good on your sanity.
What do you think?

Well I was interested until I heard that this game uses Star Force, hence I stay well away from it!

Well, if this game uses Starforce, it sure as hell ain't working
Starforce is a wicked(in a bad way) copy-protection method. Copy-protection is illegal, but this is much more than that. These people should be shot with dull rusty bullets of very small caliber. Do a search on these very forums for more info.

It's also very easy to remove from your system with a little program you can download for free. Too many good games are Starforce protected these days, including one of my personal favourites, Silent Hunter 3. I had it in my system once, it came from the Sacred Gold disc, i didn't even know they used Starforce too.

BEWARE: once you use the SF remover, if you so much as run an SF protected game, it's back.
BTW: I checked, this game(atleast my copy) does not appear to have SF.
Also, I'd like to correct my previous mistake. When a friend informed me that BFME2 had SF, he was... well, mistaken. EA has, as of yet, not used SF. Atleast they do something right

I read in PC Format, my fave magazine, that there is nothing wrong with Starforce, the company that made it said it would pay 10.000 dollars to anyone who could come up with a proof it did any harm to systems... no one has yet even come close to proofing it does.
The reason it has such a bad reputation is that it is very tough to crack and the people who have bitched the most about it are gamecrackers and pirates. However, the way the drivers are snuck into you system with out letting you know is not exactly encouraging.
I have few Games that use Star Force and have no trouble at all... and can't for the life of me understand what all the fuzz is about...

The argument of coming to Moscow and proof that it's a rotten system, BUT you have to pay for your own expenses, is shady enough, don't you think ?

Anyway, Starforce DOES corrupt your system's defenses, and it DOES cause random crashes. I've seen it happen, in my own friggin system. After Starforce was deleted, the crashes stopped. Coinsedence ? I think not.

Why would you doubt the alarming sounds of hundreds of people who are not even connected to eachother ? Starforce IS rotten, no doubt. If you pay me a ticket to Moscow and back, i'll go there and deliver proof of how rotten it exactly is.

Please, johnny, if you're going, pick me up as well. My little baby needs to have a word or two with them as well
Yes, it does damage. Alot of it. Seen it on other comps and experienced it on my own. Most of the problems went away after uninstall, but some hardware issues remained, such as:
-my DVD writer will no longer burn on any "+" drive, it reads them as full
-opening the tray of my Plextor writer looks like a robber opening a safe; I have to put my ear down on the drive(it's the top one), and listen as I press the eject button three times, the third must be right on que to a sound

Jorath,
I pay for all my games and as most other Star Force opponants, I am way to old and way to stressed to sit around hubs and download worm-ridden pirateated copies and I am way to angry to not be upset about schemes that only hurt paying consumers.

Go here, read up and don't talk about that which you don't know! The people behind this page is working for instance with UbiSoft - you might have heard that they called off Star Force from Heroes? Not due to public complaint but rather that some paying costumars got it and they didnt' go to Moscow since the money is only 1k, not 10 k.

http://www.glop.org/starforce/

Star Force is a copy protection program that works like a RootKit, adding a ring-0 which then can be used to store material/bugs/viruses/etc that you can't reach. Sony tried something like this and well - workled very well eh?

Like Johnny I have also had problems with Star Force as long back as IceWind Dale - HOW addon. Star Force is sometimes used indenpendantly on games i.e US version may not have it while EU version can have it.
