I've reached a major point in my ongoing solo game effort and just wanted to share (show off!) what I've achieved so far

First off - the char is an straight class Elven Assassin, imported from BG1 (which has meant great stats where it counts - STR 18, DEX 20, CON 16)

The major point is the first level up after 3m XP - which has meant that Baros (for that is his name) now has the use any item ability - this means that previously undefeatable foes (Beholders) should now be easy. Since Kangaxx has already fallen, as has the Shadow Dragon, this is turning out to be fairly easy (at least more so than I expected).

I've truely learnt the value of traps - they did the Dragon in without any intervention from me (I even missed with my poisoned arrow!).

Kangaxx fell to a combination of Protection from magic scroll and the Staff of Rynn, and most importantly the Sling of Everard (which I had to run off half way through to buy!). I forgot how fast he moves when he's a demi-lich (protection from undead may have made more sense!)

Other than that brief moment I've not had a single encounter that I've not been able to handle - most of it with Celestial Fury and Belm (dual wielding for 3 att/round). Belm is now replaced with the Scarlet Ninja-to. Far from the trepidation that I started with, this has become, if not quite a cake-walk, then very easy.

Obviously, there are some tough challenges still to come, but given that magic is now an option (from scrolls) and I can use fun stuff like the staff of the magi (bye bye stoneskin) (did I mention that the twisted rune has fallen as well?).

Overall I'm starting to agree with whoever it was last week saying how easy this is...

Sounds like it is to easy. I was thinking of doing my first solo game. I am just not to sure what race or charcter I would like to go through with. I was thinking of going with A Barbarian. But with out the use of magic this might be a little harder. Then I was thinking a Mage/Thief. AAAAAgh to many choices.

Try very challenging kits ....
Beast master is pretty darn hard
Druid is fun ( i love the avenger, 5-poisonous attacks per round)
Blade's are great (goes to serious power in later lvls though)

Mages/sorceres could bore you, since their power becomes awesome at high-levels

well, if you want a bit more of a challenge once you get into ToB, you should install the improved demogorgon and bhaalspawn patches from baldurdash. some of those fights can be tacticaly very demanding when you're soloing.

oh, and a piece of advice - don't waste your high level abilities picks on exploding traps! from my experience they're useless; almost all of the tougher enemies are magic resistant so they're not damaged by the blast.

I've just picked my third HLA - after use any item, I picked a spike trap, third choice has been Assassination - with my 3 attacks/round at x7 backstab that will be impressive...

BTW - I've just defeated the unseeing eye, rather annoyingly on the way out one of those stupid blind priests cast unholy blight on me - I now seem to be suffering from permanent blindness, which made my next encounter rather tough (hacked to death by assorted shadows and wraiths).

I already got the improved ToB encounters installed - something I'm looking forward to.
