Sony's software patch will require gamers to upgrade.

February 05, 2004 - Sony Online Entertainment has announced that it will be upgrading the EverQuest engine. The patch will be made in the next two months and will address issues of efficiency and stability.

These changes will require current EverQuest players to upgrade to DirectX 9 which is the most current version of Microsofts's 3D software. There will be some instances in which older video cards are not compliant with DirectX 9 and players should check for compatibility with the manufacturer of their cards. If you happen to be an EverQuest player adversely affected by the update, Sony Online Entertainment has cut a deal with NVIDIA and eVGA.com to help you out. Current EverQuest players will have access to discounts on video cards that are DX9 compliant. You can check out these deals here.

Sony added that this upgrade will only affect a small number of people using older video cards.

Older videocard? Try telling someone with a GeForce4 TI 4600 to upgrade or stop. It's not like playing EverQuest is so cheap that all it's members can afford such upgrades.

Since they're upgrading the Engine, I think it is for both.

Well, if it's a full engine update, then it's about time they required DX9, get a new video card, something by ATI, you won't regret it...

I don't play Everquest myself. Just thought it sucks for the people that now have to buy a next generation video card.
